Question about Harley Davidson FXDWG Dyna Wide Glide Motorcycles

1 Answer

How do I replace the enrichener cable/knob assembly on a 2001 Harley Davidson FXDWG Dyna Wide Glide? The plastic "tightener" nut is stripped, and the knob is cracked. The parts guy at the dealership said I have to replace the whole assembly. It has been purchased ($13) and I have loosened the old knob assembly and the air cleaner/cover. I cannot see how to get access the rear of the carburetor where the other end of the cable assembly attaches. Several online forums said I must remove the carburetor, some said otherwise. If it has to be removed in order to install the enrichener, how do I remove the carburetor? Is there an easy way to do this?

Ok, the truth is that you must remove the carburetor. Somebody might be able to do it wihout removing the carb but I can't do it. To remove the carb, first take the large nut of the backside of the enricher cable and get if free of it's bracket that holds it on that end.

Now, on the rights side of the bike, remove the oir cleaner cover, the air filter. Remove the backing plate by taking the two large bolts out where the air cleaner backing plate is held to the heads. There may be some rubber plugs in the holes covering the bolts. Once they are out. Start loosening the three smaller bolts that hold the backing plate to the carb. Loosen each screw a little at the time because they are designed not to simply screw out. Once you get them all loose, the backing plate will come off.

Now, take the fuel hose off and there is a vacuum hose connected to the backside of the carb that you must disconnect. Now, grab the carb and wiggle it while pulling on it. It will come out of the seal on the intake. With the carb at this point, you can probably take the enricher cable out using a 14mm wrench. Once you get the cable out, you'll have to swap the spring and needle plunger from the cable to the new cable. Reinstall the new cable into the carb.

Replace the "seal" on the intake and spray a bit of silicone spray on the seal and carb to help you put the carb back in. Push the carb into the seal all the way. Reconnect the enricher cable into it's bolder on the other side of the bike. Reconnect the vacuum hose and the fuel line. Replace the air filter backing plate. At his point, check the throttle to make sure the throttle works like it should. If so, you can install the air filter and cover. Make sure the throttle works as it should.

Good Luck
Steve

Choke knob doesn't stay open on 2001 H-D Superglide fxd

there should be a 17mm brass nut behind the knob. loosen it and tighten the black plastic nut outside by hand until the knob will stay out on it's own. do not lubricate the shaft and do not over tighten by hand. then re tighten the 17mm brass nut that holds the cable to the motorcycle.

Hi Anonymous, on a Dyna all fuses, circuit breakers, relays, and modules will be behind the left side panel cover secured by grommets, four nuts or screws. On later models the electrical panel bracket cover secured by four nuts or screws must also be removed to gain access to electrical components. Good luck and have nice day.

Do i need to remove the carb to replace the choke cable on 2001 fxdwg

yes, you must remove the carb to replace the choke cable. The cable has a plastic piece that screws into the carb body. Since it's so close in that area, it's just easier to remove the carb.

Good Luck

2003 harley davidson fxdwg dyna wide glide is idling high. how do i adjust the choke?

The choke has nothing to do with the Idle. If the choke cable is too loose, there's a nut on the backside of the bracket where the knob is. You can tighten it just a bit but be careful, the parts are made of plastic and they break easily.

On your idle, if your bike is equipped with a carb, remove the air filter cover. At the top right of the carb is the throttle stop screw. Clockwise to increase the speed, Counterclockwise to decrease.

If your bike fuel injected, you'll have to take it to a shop to get the idle set, It's done electronically.

The choke won't stay out when I pull it. When I pull it all the way out, the cable seems to pull it back in.

Either the tension adjustment is not correct on the cable or someone has "lubricated" the cable. Never apply any type of lubricant to this cable. It depends on friction to hold it in position.

The tension or friction is adjustable. If you look at the cable closely where it comes through the bracket that holds it, you'll see a serated plastic nut and a metal nut. The metal nut holds the entire cable in the bracket. The serated nut adjust the tension on the cable. By turning the nut clockwise, you increase the tension making the cable stay where it's put. Counterclockwise makes the cable move more freely. Carefully tighten the serated nut to get the tension you need.

You cable may already be damaged too. In the previous paragraph, I said to "carefully" tighten the serated nut. If you try to tighten the nut too much, the plastic housing at the knob will break. Once this happens, you must replace the cable in order to get it to work correctly.
