If there is no power to the dash, then the pop was probably a short. Check if there is power to the ignition. You need to find out where the short interrupted contacts using a volt meter. Start ensuring that battery is OK, then check fuses and relay. When a good relay is on it will show volts on two of its contacts. A relay can also be tested by swapping/replacing it with a relay of same kind.Check if there is power to fuse plate and to ignition

Here the service manual ( in English): Download.

See sections 16-4-19 and 20. Pay particular attention to page 4-46, check the connections to electronic control module as shown in sec.4-46.

The manual is massive, it is better if you print the relevant sections and wiring diagrams to do the job.

Chect the main fuse. It is a dogbone fuse located near the front of battery and is behind a protective cover. Always carry spares.

Any ideas why my '90 Goldwing SE won't start and has no dash lights but the radio does work?

Check your main fuse. It's probably a 30 amp. It may be tied in with your battery and starting solenoid all the wires from your battery that should take you to the starter solenoid and look for 30 amp fuse or in your mmanual you should find

1993 Honda GL 1500 SE Gold Wing dash lights not working

Hi, Anonymous if you have a dash or instrument light that is out and you have confirmed that the bulb is good then you need to do some quick diagnostics all you need is a test light and a wiring diagram usually found in the back of your service or owners manual.
1. Make sure your battery is fully charged with "CLEAN" and "TIGHT" connections and the instrument light fuse is not blown.
2. Inspect the bulb socket for corrosion and clean as necessary, a spray can of electrical contact cleaner and compressed air works the best.
3. Confirm your test light is working properly by connecting one end to the battery negative post and touching battery positive post with the sharp probe, the test light should illuminate.
4. With the ignition turned on to confirm you have power to the bulb socket by connecting your test light to battery negative or ground and probe the center contact, the test light should illuminate if not you need to check the integrity of the switch or sending unit the light represents, if that is ok then you have a short in the wiring between the component and the light bulb, if all is ok proceed to the next step.
5. Confirm you have a good ground to the light bulb socket by connecting the test light to battery positive and probe any metal part of the socket housing, the test light should illuminate, if not you need to find the short and repair as necessary.
6. Inspect the integrity of the spring loaded positive contact insulation tab by pushing against it with your test light to see if it goes down and springs back fully to it's operating position again contact cleaner and compressed air works best to restore proper function.
7. If your bike has a lot of mileage the vibration can cause bulbs to become loose in the socket by wearing down the soldered contact thus loosing spring pressure from the tab and eventually stop making contact this can be fixed by replacing the bulb or putting a drop of solder on the worn out end to ensure contact.
8. If all of your dash lights are out but are good then you most likely have a faulty connection to the dash wiring harness, inspect the connector for corroded, broken, or loose pins/sockets.

1997 Goldwing se No Spark

First make sure you have at least 12.6volts at battery. Next ensure you have voltage at ignition coil. Check resistance on all spark plug cables. Holding a spark plug cable using insulated pliers check for spark to ground. No spark buy a cheap tool which just fits on one side of spark plug cable. If you an get no spark at all you will probably have to buy a new coil. Voltage going to coli should be close to battery voltage.

How is your battery? Sure sounds like it's too weak to turn over the starter.

Assuming that it always started just fine and then the battery is the problem. Many times it slows down gradually--like it turns over slower and slower until the battery finally has no power.

Try charging it.
