It sounds like you've got either a fuel problem or an ignition problem. The fuel problem is probably the easiest to troubleshoot. Disconnect your fuel line and the carb and put it into a empty gas can. Turn on the petcock and observe the fuel running into the can. Watch it long enough for at least a quart of fuel to run into the can. If, after a short while, the fuel flow slows or stops, loosen your fuel cap. If the flow picks back up, replace the fuel cap. If not, drain the tank and pull the petcock and find out what the problem with that is.

If the fuel is alright, the ignition may be the problem. Has the engine recently started to make a strange whining noise that sounds like an alternator on a car whining? If so, you may have lost an inner camshaft bearing. About the only thing you can check with a meter on your ignition system is the coil. Disconnect the small wires from the coil and use an ohm meter to check the resistance of the primary side of the coil. It should be between 2 and 3 Ohms.

Good Luck
Steve

Dodge spits and sputers on half a tank

Have fuel pressure tested. Pump may be getting weak, filter plugged, or not likely but possible, hole in pick-up tube in tank. Make sure you try to have it tested when lower and spitting and sputtering.

Spitting sputering back fire power loss running hot

Hi Anonymous, popping, coughing, spitting, or backfiring through the carburator or induction module is usually caused by air getting sucked in combustion chamber do bad intake seals leaking. Leaking exhaust gaskets can also be suspect. Remove air cleaner and backing plate, while engine is idling spray WD-40 or Brake Kleen around intake manifold to head area, if RPM's increase you have an intake leak and seals need to be replaced, also spark plugs will be burning whiter than normal. Also the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or damaged battery.
2. Loose, corroded or broken battery cable.
3. Alternator not charging or below normal rates.
4. Failed ignition coil, ignition/electronic module.
5. Failed CKP, CPS, CMP, MAP, TPS, or BAS sensor.
6. Faulty ignition switch.
7. Water or dirt in fuel system, carburetor or filter.
8. Fuel tank vent system plugged or gas cap not venting.
9. Fuel tank empty.
10. Fuel valve vacuum line broken or carburator vent line closed off.
11. Restricted, blocked or kinked fuel line.
12. Failed fuel pump, pressure regulator and or fuel injectors.

Check your fuel filter again. Dirt from the tank could have clogged it again.
