Question about Harley Davidson FLHTCUI Electra Glide Ultra Classic Motorcycles

1 Answer

2008 electra glide ultra classic I bought this in October 2007 and it is in the shop again because the stator is bad and will not charge the battery. This is the 3 time the stator has been replaced I think there may be other issues at work here. Am I correct, has there been an ongoing problem with this from others, what can i look for the fix this problem for good or is this just a lemon bike in this regard? Mike

Unless there is something physically damaging the stators, the only other thing that could be taking them out is overload. The Ultra's come with the highest output alternators of all the Harleys they make. Usually what takes them out is too much of a load on the alternator. Has a bunch of extras lights or other electrical equipment been added to the bike? If so, you may be running the alternator at it's peak output. Since you are required by law to run your lights all the time, this puts a heavy load on the alternator. If you have a lot of extra stuff on the bike, you may consider taking some of it off.

Or, you may want to consider a heavy duty alternator available on the aftermarket. Try to find one rated at least ten amps more output than the one you have. Cycle Electrics has a good 3-phase alternator kit out and it's very good.

Good Luck

You need to find an H-D shop where somebody knows about radios etc. Good luck with that. OR an automobile radio shop might be better able to assist you.

Stator plug

By "stator", I'll assume you mean the alternator, specifically the wires coming from it's stator coils that go through the crankcase, to the regulator.

The stator plug is at the front of the engine crankcase.
The starter is above the transmission.

There's a crankcase in between them, so no, you don't have to remove starter to do anything with the alternator.
