Possibilities are; handlebar kill switch is grounding out, kick stand kill switch is broken or needs adjusting, a bad spark plug, power wire to ignition has come unplugged, bad ignition switch, ignition system needs service, coil or coil wire has gone bad. This list is in sequence of likelihood.

I'm getting no spark to the plugs .the bike has been standing for ten years.Looking for the wire digram gs550e 1980. pls can you help. thanks

There are 2 coils on your bike. If no spark at all 4 spark plugs, it could be bad kill switch. Disconnect the wires going to both coils. You should have battery voltage at one of the leads going to each coil with the key on. If spark at 2 plugs of the same coil, the other coil could be bad.
Good luck, i hope this helps.

1980 Suzuki GS450, jump started my bike and now no spark, I blew the main fuzz, replaced it but still now spark, could the Igniter have gone bad or other ignition related problem be why it has no spark, I...

It is OK to jump start your motorcycle from a car battery as long as you do not crank the starter too long (it will burn the armature) and as long as the car/other vehicle is not running when you jump start your bike ( you can damage your electrical components( igniter box)). See if you can exchange one with a friend to see if that is the bad component.

1980 Yamaha XS 400 Special First, How do you tell if it has an electronic ignition? Second, Can't get it to start. Have put gas in spark plug holes. Didn't hit. Bike has been setting on a dirt...

First, you need a good battery. The bike does have electronic ignition. Soak the carbs in denatured alcohol for two hours after removing the float bowls, then clean with spray cleaner. Spray into every large and small hole you can find. Remove the rubber diaphragm from the center of carb prior to cleaning. New diaphragms are $196 each. Check all fuses. Put in new spark plugs, NGK-BP7ES. Clean the air filter. Get a can of spray starter fluid and spray on the air filter. The rubber mounts for the carbs are likely to be a problem once it gets running. It looks like they are still available at Babbitt's, $53 each. If un-carburetored air can get into the joints it will lean the fuel mix and cause uncontrollable high idle.

Before you sink a lot of money into the bike, check for spark. If spark is present, coast the bike down a good sized hill without any spark plugs being installed. Put the bike in 3rd gear as you go downhill then let the clutch out to turn the engine over. Now ( using the clutch lever ), shift through all the gears then neutral. If the bike will not shift properly it likely has a bent shift fork. I can't find any forks avaiable. With a bad tranny I would put it back in the dirt floor building and find a newer bike. Here is a link to Babbitt's. Please rate my answer. Thanks.

How do you bypass the wiring for a 1980 yamaha 250 motorcycle so i can get spark

Generally for old bikes, removal of any loom connections in FRONT of ignition coil will do it. But beware. you have no way of turning the bike off except swift removal off the plug lead. High rev use will also damage rectifier/regulator and cdi units as correct source coils have been wrongly circuited with no lights.

ck to see if you are getting spark. If not, ck the coils for wire connections and juice while cranking. If you have spark, the coils are fine. Make sure you are getting fuel..

Need help with my 1980 suzuki gs750l

you should see a spigot on the carb ( normally a brass color) thats where the fuel line goes. and to check for spark, pull off plug cap, remove plug and place it into the cap. rest the plug on the motor so it is touching at the thread part. then try to start the bike while looking at the plug, you will see the spark jump from the electrode, thats if you have a spark, if not then you need to start looking at why? maybe bad coil of just a fuse blown. do you have all other electrics working

SPARK

Connect your tester to the big thick spark plug lead and crank the engine. You should see a nice big fat blue spark. If you don't disconnect the engine kill button. If there still is no spark you will need to determine if the engine has points or electronic ignition. Most (but not all !) bikes built before 1980 have points ignition. Most bikes built after 1980 (but not all !) have some sort of electronic ignition system. If in doubt pull one of the crank end covers (Usually 2-3 screws) and look ! If you have a battery and coil points system see the points page If you have a points magneto system see the Magneto page. If you have an electronic ignition system see the electronic ignition page. ,,,
