Question about 1996 BMW K 1100 LT

1 Answer

1994 K 1100 LT 100k miles 90 + degree days, loses power (top end) above 90mph. will not go over 105 mph blows black smoke (rich) 75 degrees..........125+ on gps go figure. likely suspects......coils, hall effect generator for ignition, ecu or my favorite......a head wind and a diesel in front of me blowing black smoke all over my buddies. It would be nice if somebody knows rather than me working my way thru the systems......can we all say lazy. a heat gun at idle may not be the same as a heat gun and 6,000 rpm in 5th. I'd hate to have to take a different bike when it is hot or slow down for that matter.

good call, I like this idea. far easier than heat gunning things. The bike may have a t-stat issue. I always thought the bike ran hot.......It went up the haul road in Alaska which is known to plug radiators. A power washer brought the temp into normal range by the gauge till it gets really hot out. But, at 105K who the hell knows. I am going to have to measure it and not go by the gauge.....Radiator, t-stat......at a 100K the inside of the radiator could be plugged to a degree. I am looking forward to it being the temp. sensor to the ecu. Thanks.

It might be your water temp sensor failing....apparently the K1100 has 2...one for the gauge, one for the fuel injection computer....if the sensor fails...it appears to the computer as if coolant is cold and it increases fuel like on a cold start. Yours or the wiring for it might be failing in the heat

2008 6.4 f350. blowing tons of blue smoke for the last 12 months

Blue smoke means burning oil. Black smoke means running too rich (too much fuel in the air/fuel mix). If it is blue smoke:
If it blows blue smoke only shortly after starting, it means oil is leaking into the cylinders from above, through the valves. This us typical of older engines, and can be repaired without removing the engine from the truck (although it is still expensive). A 2008 should not have this kind of problem.
If it blows blue smoke all the time, it is bad piston rings or scored cylinder walls. Oil is leaking from below up into the cylinders. This is bad news - any solution will require removing the engine from the truck and complete disassembly (i.e. a rebuild). No engine oil treatment will make it go away, regardless of what the label says.
It is very, very rare in modern engines for a well maintained vehicle with less than 100K miles to need a rebuild. Damage such as this usually comes from not changing oil AND the oil filter often enough. 3-4000 miles for conventional oil or 6-8000 miles for synthetics. If using synthetic, be sure to get a high quality filter designed to be effective for the synthetic oil change interval.

02 Audi a4 losing power

You have blown a turbo charge pipe somewhere, check all hoses...Once this happens the car will begin to run very rich, as evidenced by the black smoke. Do not continue to drive like this, as the raw unburned fuel in the exhaust will clog the catalysts and that can be very expensive.
