Question about 1999 Honda VT 1100 C3 Shadow Aero

Rode my 1999 1100 ACE for the first time this year and the rear axle leaked oil out the vent on the left side(driveshaft side). Not sure why it would do this or what to do to stop it. It's leaking while I ride because it getting splattered on the rim and tire.

    I rode the mike tonight about 55 miles and don't believe it leak any. Maybe it just leak some over the winter and just heated up on my first ride and then leak out the housing to the tire and rim. I'm draining the fluid out tonight and refilling it tomorrow with top quality 80/90 wt gear oil and hopefully this will be the end of the leak. Thanks for you answer.

There could be several causes for the leak. 1) The fluid was changed and too much 80/90 hypoid gear oil was put out and the excess is coming out the breather. 2) The breather cap is missing or malfunctioning cause oil to come out the top of the final drive. 3) If the cap is plugged it has pushed out the drive shaft seal on the front of the final drive or the larger seal on the side behind the spline shaft.4) one of the seals has gone bad causing the leak. I would start by cleaning off the final drive and changing the oil. Make sure the cycle is level and do not fill the final drive above the fill hole. Ride the cycle and identify if it is still happening and if it is the location. If the oil was coming out the breather it may not happen again. If the leak is coming out of one of the seals , replace the bad seal. Be careful not to over tight the large fill cap, it is designed to break if you over tighten it. It is designed this way so you do not have to take a hammer and chisel to get it off. If the cap was previously over tightened and your leak is coming from that location , you may have a cracked fill cap that is causing the leak. In this case refill the final drive with 80/90 hypoid gear oil to the appropriate level and install a new cap and o-ring.

sounds like something is ruining that boot. check the surrounding area of the boot, check to make sure its installed right. as for the front your ging to have to just replace that seal.

you will have to dimantle rear hub withdraw driveshaft and replace seal oon axle drain axle oil first square drain plug in centre of axle hope this helps

I'm trying to service the rear differential but can't find the plug 2 put my gear oil in...help pls...


Look up high, on the differential case. Fill the gear oil there.

When I looked it up on my online resource it says there is a vent hose at the top of the differential, #7.

Rear Axle Axle Housing Assembly Removal & Installation To Remove:

  1. Raise and support the rear of the vehicle safely using jackstands under the frame. Position a floor jack or a second set of jackstands to support the rear axle housing. If a floor jack is being used, take care when removing the U-bolts to keep the axle from suddenly dislodging.
  2. Remove the rear wheels and drums for clearance and to remove some weight from the axle housing.
  3. If equipped, remove the axle vibration dampener.
  4. Matchmark and remove the rear driveshaft from the pinion flange. Either remove the shaft completely from the vehicle or support it aside from the undercarriage using safety wire, but DO NOT allow the shaft to hang from the slip joint.
  5. Remove the shock absorber-to-axle housing retainers, then swing the shock absorbers away from the axle housing.
  6. Disconnect the brake lines from the axle housing clips and the backing plates (wheel cylinders). NOTE: When disconnecting the brake lines from the wheel cylinders, immediately plug or cap the lines to prevent system contamination or excessive fluid loss.
  7. If applicable, unplug the speed sensor connectors at the junction block.
  8. Disconnect the parking brake cable(s).
  9. Disconnect the axle housing-to-spring U-bolt nuts, washers. U-bolts and the anchor plates.
  10. Remove the vent hose from the top of the axle housing.
  11. Remove the axle with the help of an assistant by moving it to clear the leaf spring, or if desired, the leaf springs can be disconnected from the frame at the rear end to lower the axle down and back, but first refer to the leaf spring procedures for information regarding spring installation and removal.
To Install:
  1. With the help of an assistant, carefully position the rear axle into the vehicle.
  2. Connect the vent hose to the axle housing.
  3. Be sure the housing is properly positioned on the leaf spring, then loosely install the U-bolts, anchor plates, washers and nuts.
    • Tighten the U-bolt nuts in a cross pattern to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm) to make sure everything is evenly seated. Then tighten the nuts in steps to 41 ft. lbs. (55 Nm) on 1994-95 models or 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm) on 1996 and later models.
  4. Remove the caps from the brakes lines then connect the lines and secure them to the axle housing.
  5. If removed, connect the parking brake cable(s).
  6. If applicable, attach the speed sensor connectors to the junction block.
  7. Align and install the driveshaft assembly. Refer to the procedure earlier in this section for details.
  8. Install the shock absorbers to the lower mounts, then tighten the mount nuts.
  9. If equipped, install the axle vibration dampener.
  10. Install the brake drums and the tire/wheel assemblies.
  11. Properly refill the brake master cylinder and bleed the hydraulic brake system.
  12. Check the fluid level in the rear axle assembly and add, as necessary. Make sure the vehicle is level when checking and adding fluid.
  13. Remove the jackstands and carefully lower the truck.

Where is the leak? Toward the middle or at the right or left sides near the rear wheels?

How do i change out my rear end


remove wheels calipers and rotors, remove rear cover and drain oil from diff, remove abs sensors if it has abs,remove axle shafts, this is done by removing the 8mm bolt holding the pin, slide pin out push axle in to remove c clip holding axle then slide out, do the same to other side, note dont spin diff or gears will fall out,dissconect driveshaft, next remove axle vent and unbolt brake hose from axle,leaving brake lines connected unclip them from axle housing, next support diff with jack, dissconect lower shock bolts and slide shocks to side, remove upper control arm bolts from diff, slowly lower diff to release spring tension now remove springs and remove lower arm bolts. lower diff and take out. reverse to install. hope this helps.

How to disassemble the rear end in a 2000 gmc yukon and how to remove axles


Removal & Installation To Remove:
  1. Before servicing the vehicle refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section
  2. Loosen the lug nuts on the wheel and tire assemblies but do not remove the lug nuts
  3. Raise and support the vehicle
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Wheel and tire assemblies
    • Axle lubricant into a suitable container
    • Rear driveshaft
    • Parking brake cable
    • Brake calipers
    • Shock absorbers from the axle brackets
    • Vent hose from the rear axle vent fitting
    • Nuts and the washers from the U-bolts
    • U-bolts, spring plates and spacers from the axle assembly
  5. Lower the axle assembly from the vehicle
To Install:
  1. Place the rear axle assembly under the vehicle
  2. Align the rear axle assembly with the springs then connect the spacers, spring plates and the U-bolts to the rear axle
  3. Raise the rear axle assembly into position
  4. Install or connect the following:
    • Washers and nuts to the U-bolts; Torque to: 59 lb-ft. (80 Nm) then, Torque to: 89 lb-ft. (120 Nm)
    • Vent hose to the rear axle vent fitting
    • Shock absorbers to the rear axle
    • Brake calipers (See: Brake Caliper)
    • Parking brake cable (See: Parking Brake Cable)
    • Rear driveshaft (See: Rear Driveshaft)

  5. Fill the rear axle with lubricant
  6. Bleed the brake system (See: Brake Bleeding)
  7. Install the wheel and tire assemblies
  8. Lower the vehicle to the ground
  9. Torque lug nuts as follows:
    • Single Wheel: Torque to: 140 lb-ft. (190 Nm)
    • Dual Wheel: Torque to: 175 lb-ft. (240 Nm)
  10. Road test the vehicle to check performance

The rear axle seals are leaking too,it's been my experience with Dodge 2500's,all 3 seals leaking is usually a indication that there are bearings going south!

Right rear axle seal leaks


If only your axle seals are leaking then just remove one axel at a time. Take it to an automotive machine shop where they will press of the old seals bearings and reatainer and press on a new seal barring and reatainer all greased up and ready to slide back into place. No need to replace the whole axle for a leaky seal. Once this is done with both sides ( assuming both sides are leaking) refil the differential so the oil just starts to ooze out of the fill hole and replace the cap. Presto you are good to go. Also an important note. Make sure sure rear breaks are not soaked in 90W oil. This will impede your breaking ability and cause a dangerous situation. If the break pads are soaked they will most likely need to be replaced.

I have a 91 4 runner that just started making a (hard to describe) periodic buzz/whine sound coming from the right front driveshaft/axle area mostly when 4x4 is disengaged


Neal, it may not be the right front axle. I thought I had the same problem with 97 4Runner but it turned out to be the right rear axle bearing. Even the technican thought the niose was coming from the right front axle when he test drove it with me. Seems those rear bearings go out if you do a lot of towing with the truck. Cost about $ 400.00 to replace make sure they replace the ABS sensor collar and replace the axle breather tube vent ( they get plugged and when they replace the bearing , they have to replace the seal in the axle also and mine leaked after because of a plugged axle vent.
