2001 hayabusa 1300 my starter spins gear but won't crank over what could be the reason any help

Hi, Adrian the starter drive/Bendix/clutch is a mechanical gear driven component that engages the clutch pack ring gear to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed, it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced.

Starter motor just spins on a triumph sprint st 955i

As a rule motorcycle starters connect directly to a gear or through a chain that will drive that gear to turn the engine. This gear the starter connects to, is a one way clutch, in other words it will only lock in the direction the starter turns it, and it will turn freely in the other direction.
If you are positive that the starter is turnning, this one way clutch gear would be the thing to check. Usually this envolves removing one of the engine side covers to get to it. With the starter removed , you can check it by spinning the gear in both directions. If it spins in both directions is not good! Also, If you just remove only the side cover you can see if by turning the starter the gear spins. If the gear turns without engage the crank then you will know that the the one way clutch gear is no good as well. (do not run the engine, just spin it and turn it off, it's only to check.) Be known that, I do not know the configuration of this motorcycle. However, the above info is true to most motorcycles.
Hope it helps you!

My 1999 Aprilia RSV Mille starter turns (can here it whirring) but does not crank the engine

The starter clutch is failed. The starter clutch is located on the back of the flywheel, so you'll have to remove the flywheel. The flywheel is difficult to remove and sometimes requires heat (torch) along with a three bolt type puller. Once the flywheel is off, the repair is fairly straight forward. Just remove the old clutch, paying attention to the direction of the rollers, and install the new one. The gear on the flywheel should also be replaced to insure good performance of the new clutch and starting system.

Replace starter clutch on a 97 Harley Fatboy

You have to remove the starter from the bike and then take the starter apart. Remove the starter motor from the solenoid housing and then remove the gear housing from the front of the solenoid. The starter clutch comes out. You'll probably have to remove the bearings from the old unit and install them back onto the new unit. If you need an exploed view drawing, contact me directly at wd4ity@bellsouth.net. Remind me of what you want.

97 fatboy starter engages but will not stay engaged.

I would check the starter clutch its self first. It is a one way clutch so if you remove the starter and disassemble it to the starter clutch and hold the starter clutch in one hand and use your other hand to turn the starter clutch gear, it should only turn in one direction.

Changing the starter

INSPECT OVERRUNNING CLUTCH 1. Slide the overrunning clutch along the shaft. Replace it if does not slide smoothly. 2. Rotate the overrunning clutch (A) both ways. Does it lock in one direction and rotate smoothly in reverse? If it does not lock in either direction or it locks in both directions, replace it. 299a793.gif 3. If the starter driver gear (B) is worn or damaged, replace the overrunning clutch assembly: the gear is not available separately. Check the condition of the flywheel or torque converter ring gear if the starter drive gear teeth are damaged.
CLEANING 1. Do not immerse parts in cleaning solvent. Immersing the yoke assembly and/or armature will damage the insulation. Wipe these parts with a cloth only. 2. Do not immerse the drive unit in cleaning solvent. The overrun clutch is pre-lubricated at the factory and solvent will wash lubrication from the clutch. 3. The drive unit may be cleaned with a brush moistened with cleaning solvent and wiped dry with a cloth. findme(''); findme(''); findme(''); 7d082d0.gif
