Question about 2001 Yamaha SR 125

I'm having trouble starting my Yamaha SR125. When I try to start it the ignition relay buzzes. I recharged the battery, tested the ignition relay and eventually replaced the battery, all to no avail. It turns over & starts fine from a car battery and I think the starter motor needs to draw in excess of 30amps to crank it over. Before I build up courage to remove the crank case cover and renew the starter motor, does anyone have any similar experiences?

Ignition relay buzz with a new battery is almost always bad connection to the battery or some other component. Do you have a friend's bike battery you could use for a jump? That would tell you if the starter was healthy. Clean EVERY connection in the starter circuit on both ground and positive sides.

    I've tested the negative (earth) side with a multitester and has good continuity. The positive also seems good. With the starter motor disconnected, the relay holds in without a problem and has continuity through it. It will jump start from a larger battery without a problem and runs fine. Both the old and new batteries will not crank it over despite being fully charged and showing 13.5 volts. With the starter motor disconnected, all lights

    OK, then take your jumper cables and eliminate the entire system by grounding right to the engine cases with the negative clamp and positive cable clamp right to the starter terminal (or as close as you can get to it (perhaps you can only access the cable from the relay to the starter?) If the car battery makes it go but your fresh bike battery doesn't then you have a starter problem. Make these connections to the bike first and then hook up the battery . Make and break the connection on the - post of the battery.

    As you suggested, the outcome is that it barely turns over on the new bike battery but cranks fine on a car battery, so I guess you think it's going to be the starter? I'd better start it up and drain the oil.

    It does sound like a boned starter. Probably brushes and fairly blackened commutator segments.
    It's possible to sort it out but you need a lathe usually. If it is just worn out brushes you should be able to get a rebuild kit and clean up the commutator with Scotchbrite.
    I sure hope your new battery is actually healthy though. Was it a fresh drycharge that you added the electrolyte to and then topped off the charge?

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel tank empty.
2. Fuel supply valve/petcock turned off.
3. Fouled spark plugs.
4. Engine flooded as a result of overuse of the enricher.
5. Vacuum hose to the fuel supply valve/petcock disconnected, broken, cracked, or pinched.
6. Fuel valve/petcock or filter clogged.
7. Fuel line to carburetor or throttle body pinched or kinked.
8. Carburetor float stuck.
9. Fuel injectors clogged.
10. Severely discharged or damaged battery, you need 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
11. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.

Starter solenoid buzzes and will not turn over

1. Ignition Switch not in the "ON" position.
2. Engine Run Switch in the "OFF" position.
3. Discharged battery, needs to be 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.

Hi, Joe you may have fried the ECM while trying to jump it from the Jeep otherwise the usual suspects are:
1. Ignition Switch not in the "ON" position.
2. Engine Run Switch in the "OFF" position.
3. Discharged battery, needs to be 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
4. Check the battery terminals for damage or corrosion check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
5. Tip over sensor needs a reset.
6. Faulty ignition switch.
7. Faulty starter button.

Yamaha v-star won't start buzzing noise

My yamaha radian won't start


Hi, Joseph before testing any electrical component in the Starter Circuit it is "IMPERATIVE" that you have a fully charged battery of 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test because your battery may have 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amps causing the battery to be faulty and must be replaced, especially "AGM" batteries.
1. Ignition Switch not in the "ON" position.
2. Engine Run Switch in the "OFF" position.
3. Check the battery terminals for damage or corrosion check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter.
4. Bank angle sensor needs a reset or is faulty.
5. FOB battery low or dead.
6. Faulty ignition switch.
7. Faulty starter button.
8. Faulty kickstand or clutch pull in switch/sensor.
9. Security alarm needs a reset.
10. Starter relay, solenoid or starter circuit wiring faulty.
11. Starter armature or field coils have failed.
12. Main fuse or circuit breaker may be blown or faulty.
13. The electric starter is working but starter clutch has failed.

My yamaha radian won't start. When I try and start it I hear a buzzing clicking sound from under the seat. I just replaced the starter solenoid but that hasn't helped

I'm having trouble starting my Yamaha R6. The battery seems fine, all lights turn on, but when I try to start it, I hear a buzzing/clicking sound. Is the issue with the starter relay? Or do I need to...


Hi, Arpit_kadaki it should be noted that in order to "PROPERLY" diagnosis any electric starter issue it is "IMPERATIVE" that you begin with a fully charged battery 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a proper load test, and the usual suspects are:
1. Battery terminals have loose or corroded connections.
2. Battery cables faulty due corroded or broken internal wiring at the cable connector especially the "NEGATIVE" cable which needs to be checked at "BOTH" ends.
3. Battery voltage, must be 12.5 volts or better, voltage from the battery to the main circuit breaker to the ignition switch to the security/ignition fuse to the TSM/TSSM module to the engine stop/run switch to the starter button to the starter relay to the green wire that connects to the starter solenoid can not drop more than 1/2 volt of battery voltage.
4. With a voltmeter connected to the battery, the ignition switch in the on position, the kill switch in the run position, the starter button depressed, starter engagement should not bring voltage below 8-9 volts.
If a lower voltage is produced a proper battery load test should be performed with a load tester to validate battery integrity or battery replacement.
5. Faulty starter relay, check continuity.
6. Faulty starter solenoid, check contact plate and shoes for excessive electrical erosion/etching, refurbish as necessary or invert contact plate and use the virgin backside. Check contact shoes for being loose. Replace solenoid if the negative function is still a final outcome.
7. Faulty starter, bench test starter with a 12-volt battery if negative function check, decontaminate and undercut armature commutator segments as necessary, check segments with an ohmmeter probe each one and the segment next to it for shorts. Have the armature tested with a growler and field coils, and brush plate with an ohm-meter for opens, shorts or grounds. Replace brushes if less than .438" It is generally cheaper to overhaul/refurbish a starter motor than buy a new one.
