Question about kawasaki KX 125 Motorcycles

Cant seem to get the old back brake pads out is there something other then takking the two pins out\?

Probably need to remove the caliper frmm the disc, usually 2 bolts

Hello Dale, this is an easy job on your bike. Use a flat head screw driver and remove the brake pad cover...it will pop off.
Remove the hairpin type clips off of the ends of the brake pad pins.... Use pliers & pull the brake pad pins out from the front of the rear brake caliper....Clean the rear brake caliper's piston with brake cleaner. Use a rag and wipe it clean...Reinsert the old brake pads into the caliper. Place a pry bar between the brake pads, then push the inner piston into the caliper body, this will allow room to install new pads.... Remove the old brake pads...Coat the brake pad pins and the new brake pads metal back plates with high-temperature grease.

Slip the new brake pads into the rear brake caliper, then push the brake pad pins halfway into the caliper. Slip the spring clips into place between the brake pads and the brake pad pins. Push the brake pad pins completely through the rear brake caliper. Push the hairpin clips back into the brake pad pin tips. Snap the brake pad cover onto the top of the rear brake caliper....

Pump the rear brake pedal until the pedal feels firm, indicating that the brake pads have closed around the brake rotor...No bleeding will be needed because the system was never opened - That's all there is to it...i hope this information is helpful & good luck with your bike.

How to replace front discs and pads


Front brakes are very simple to do:
  • Pull off the front tires.
  • Remove the brake pads by removing the slide pin bolts where the piston assembly attaches to the caliper mounting bracket. The slide pin bolts are usually a 12 or 14mm bolt. Once the piston assembly is free slide the old brake pads out.
  • Compress the piston back into the caliper by using a large pair of channel lock pliers or a c-clamp. If you don't do this, you won't be able to get the new pads on.
  • Before you put the new pads on, replace the rotor.
  • Remove the two bolts for the caliper mounting bracket. They are in the back and are bigger than the slide pin bolts. Usually a 17 or 19mm bolt.
  • Pull off the caliper mounting bracket.
  • At this point the old rotor should slide right off. If it doesn't slide right off, look for a screw in the center of the rotor, some cars will have a screw there to hold the rotor on. If there's no screw and it still won't come off, try tapping it with a hammer. If you're replacing the rotor, don't be shy.
  • Put the new rotor on. Make sure to clean off any grease with brake cleaner that may be on the braking surface from packaging.
  • Put the caliper mounting bracket back on.
  • Put the new brake pads on. Make sure to use some anti-squeal grease on the back of the pads.
  • Put the caliper assembly back on with the slide pins. Grease up the slide pins as well.
  • Put the wheels back on.
  • Make sure to pump your brakes 10 - 15 times before you drive off. Because you compressed the piston back into the caliper, the piston will not be contacting the brake pads unless you pump the brakes.

Replace frony brakas


Pull the single pin from the top of each caliper
remove metal springs (if they are still there)
slide out old brake pads
press one side of pistons (3 per side?) back into the caliper with screw driver(s)/pry bar(s). This step may be tricky as you may have to manage to get all 3 pistons back at once (if they are separate pistons)
insert brake pad(s) into that side
press opposite pistons back into the caliper
insert brake pad(s)
replace metal spring and slide pin back through replacing cotter pin
repeat for the other side.

Have taken apart but cant get new or old pads back on now. not enough space and part that should move back to make space wont seems to be jammed or siezed. have tried letting out brake fluid but didnt...


  • To install: Front
  1. Compress the piston of the disc brake caliper.
  2. Install the brake pads and caliper assembly.
  3. Lubricate the guide pin. Tighten the guide pin to 16-23 ft. lbs. (22-31 Nm).

REAR :
  1. Pull out the pad springs and then remove the pads and shims.

To install:

  1. Clean the piston end of the caliper body and the area around the pin holes. Be careful not to get oil on the rotor.
  2. Carefully turn the piston clockwise back into the caliper body (this can be done with a pair of needle nose pliers). Take care not to damage the piston boot.
  3. Coat the pad contact area on the mounting support with a silicone based grease.
A special tool is available to rotate the caliper piston

Do not press the piston into the bore as performed on the front disc brakes. Due to the parking brake mechanism, the caliper piston must be turned into the bore.

Cant get brakes back on my 1992 gmc jimmy I cant get them to line up and go on the rotor


More than likely you have not fully compressed the caliper piston into the caliper. Take the old inner brake pad and clip it on back onto the piston. With a large clamp (one side on the back of the caliper behind the piston and the other on the face of the old brake pad) and compress the piton slowly by tightening the clamp. It needs to bottom out completely. Remove the clamp and old brake pad and install the new pads. Make sure that when you install the caliper to the rotor that the brake pads stay locked in position and it will slide over the rotors and fit snug.

The only thing you can really do, is give them a good soaking with WD-40, or similar penetrating oil spray. mabey find something the right size to tap out the pins.

How do you get your front brakes back from changing out old ones ?


Very simple. Unscrew two screws that hold on the chrome back cover.
Pull two small clips out that hold the brake pad pins. Pull out the pins and the brakes will come right out. Make sure to bleed the brakes after installing new pads. It's also a good idea to put anti-squeal
on the back of the pads before installing.

Stuck Brake Pad Pins


I suggest pulling the axle out a bit to allow the caliper assy more freedom of movement. Then see if you can get the pins out. If not, you can put something (like a piece of wood) between the pistons and the rotor on the outside and gently pump the pedal to see if that does in fact loosen the pins. But a more fundemental question: is the new floating rotor the EXACT diameter as the OEM (or whatever was on there) rotor? It sounds to me like the rotor is jammed against the pins. If it is the same size, are the new pads the same shape as the old ones (same profile on the metal backing)?

You will have to take the wheel off, then try to use a latge screw driver to pry between the old pads and the rotor to push the old pads back some, this will allow you to remove the caliper easier later. Next get a T-45 socket and remove both the top and bottom bolts from the back of the caliper. Tilt the brake caliper at the top or the bottom (it different for both side), and slide it off. Then you can just remove the pads. Be careful to notice that the shims on the caliper slide are different from top to bottom, don't mix them up. Pull the caliper slide pins out and inspect the boot for hole or cracks and the pins for rust, replace if any of these condition exist. Use some brake silicone grease to lube the slide pins and put a little into each boot and put the slide pins back in. Check the rubber boots on the caliper pistions to make sure they are not leaking any fluid or ripped. Use one of the old brake pads and a C-clamp to push both pistons on one caliper back in until they are flush. Check to make sure that no fluid leaked out of the caliper pistons while they were being pushed back in. If you want to do what is call a pad slap only then you can install that pads at this time but that is not recommended. It is recommened that you measure, check and turn the rotors if at all possible or replace them, the wheel seals and check and repack the wheel bearings.

My front breaks need changed, and i would prefer to do it myself rather than have someone else do it, i used to service my old car, so i have some knowledge of it, but i was wondering if this was something...


This is something that can easily be done by yourself. You need to begin on a flat hard surface. Engage the parking brake and jack the front end of the car up and support it with jack stands. Open the hood and remove the cap from the brake fluid resevoir to allow pressure to be put back in when you close the caliper. Remove one of the tires. You will need a set of sockets and a C Clamp. You need to unscrew the slide pins and remove them. At this point you can pull the caliper off. Find somewhere to support it. Don't let it hang by the brake line or you will be in for some trouble. I don't know if you are going to replace the rotors or just the pads. If you are replacing the rotors you will need to remove the bracket that holds the brake pads in place. Pull out the old pads and dispose of them. You can then remove the rotor and slip the new one back on. Make sure you clean it real good with brake cleaner and don't touch the surface with your fingers. Replace the pad bracket and install the new pads. You now need to compress the piston on the caliper so you can slide it back over the new bigger pads. You can do this with a C clamp. Once you have the caliper compressed slip the rotor over the new pads and rotor. I like to clean the slide pins with an old tooth brush then re apply some slide pin grease. Re install the pins and tighten them up. Put the tire back on (don't forget to torque the lug nuts to specs, I think Pontiac is 100ft/lbs.) Just repeat the process on the other side and don't forget to put the cap back on the brake fluid resevoir!
