Question about 1996 Suzuki GSF 600 S Bandit

4 Answers

I have a 1996 Suzuki bandit and on my ride home the other day the tachometer just stopped working. I thought it was moisture but I have dried everything out and checked for corrosion and there's nothing visibly wrong.

The gauge is fine and the ground is good. Tested the gauge also the neutral indicator light is out but the main fuse is good.

The gauge is good. What else besides the grond could It be? Also my neutral light went out and I can't figure why the bulb is good and I can't find a bad fuse.

    Thanks a bunch

I am going to start testing continuity what shpuld I look for?

  • leroy541 Mar 16, 2011

So I think I have tracked it down to one wire that is shared between the neutral light and the tach. So I am following that right now and I think I will be able to figure It out without having a bad tach.. if just the tach had stopped working then I would have thought it was that but two things at once my feeling is that it is a bad splice somewhere.

This is an electronic tachometer and of course it receives its signal from the ignition, so if the engine runs fine then the tachometer is defective, not uncommon in this bike. A new one is about $400.00 last time I checked, so try and locate a used one.

It is the cable inside the cord, replace the tach cord and this should correct your issue

If the wire from the tach to the coil ohms out fine run another new ground wire to the tachs metal body to the frame
If that doesn't help the tach in at fault and needs replacing

After my 20mile ride into work a green liquid came out of the rubber pipe under the engine. Not sure if its break fluid. Its a 1250 Bandit 07 reg. ABS

Hi, Rolf if it was brake fluid your brakes would either fail or become very spongey no the green liquid is engine coolant, either overfilled or the system needs to be bled if you just changed your coolant, for this scenario you will need your service/owners manual if you can't find the first and best tool you ever bought for your Yamaha, despair not, for a mere zero $ you can download another one. Tachometer only works when the bike is warm

Hi, Get a wiring diagram for your model. You need to find the main feed[s] for the tachometer and the wires for the indicators. Make sure the earth connections to both tacho and indicators are good. Check all connections/connectors for these parts. It is possible that moisture has got into somewhere and is the cause of your problems. Spray into the indicator switch on the handle bars with a maintenance spray. Please do not use WD40 as it does get rid of rust/corrosion but as it is partly water based it will allow rust/corrosion to begin again. If you can get light weight spray grease this will help. Also check the bulb holders in the indicators they do get corroded and cause many problems.

You can also use the maintenance spray around the tacho unit it may be moisture affecting this as well.

My 1996 suzuki bandit will not come on what do I do ive checked the battery and the fuses they are fine? it was working fine until a couple days ago

is the battery more than 12.5 volts if its not its no good, get another battery...if you dont believe me try and push start it with the key on if it starts and runs kind of crappy at first its because the battery needs to be charged up..nothing that a good twenty minute freeway ride should fix up if the battery is less than two years old.

Speedo on a 1995 bandit stopped working

If your speedometer works by a cable coming from the front wheel, remove it at the speedometer head bottom, spin the front wheel to see if the inner cable turns, if it does, the speedometer head assembly is bad.
