I had a backfire this week on initial startup. This has been a one time occurrence. The bike has only 1700 miles and was purchase new in 2010. This has never happended before. The bike is still under factory warranty. Is this condition because of bad fuel?

Never give away your privilege of free warranty , hence do not try and do it yourself but it will good to learn from the free deal.
It is possible that the timing had shifted, there is a resetting after the initial run period when the valve/ignition timings will be checked and reset.
Finally the fuel issue will be confirmed once this is checked , to confirm run off all the fuel and fill with high grade from a reputed fuel pump station.

Kawasaki problems

A 4 year old bike is too young for those kind of problems.

I would not fiddle with it, let a service tech do it. Bike is too new for driveway hack fixes.....That's just how I feel.

Backfire on 2010 flstc?

Backfiring is caused by a lean air/fuel (A/F) ratio. A leaner A/F ratio takes longer to burn and will continue to burn in the exhaust, hence the backfiring. Is the bike stock, or have you changed the air cleaner or pipes? Both of these changes will result in a leaner A/F ratio. HD bikes with fuel injection already run lean to meet emissions requirements, so changing pipes, etc. will make the problem worse. If you have not made any changes to the bike, make sure that the fuel system is clean and you are using good quality gas. You can also have the bike's computer (ECU) remapped to run a little richer. Your dealer may be able to do this for you, or there are aftermarket ECU tuners available for your bike that can adjust the fuel map and ignition. These will give you the added benefit of more power and a cooler running engine.

Backfire carb

Urals need to be throughly warmed up before riding, old technology engine. As far as the revving, I'd Check for vacuum leaks at the Carburator with some carb cleaner while idling, and if that's not it, I'd check the choke.

Bike backfires and misses.

Run some Seafoam through the carbs. Should be available locally at a parts store. Mix with your gas according to directions. This will clean out the carbs, which sound like they are a little gummed up.

I have a 2003 Fatboy that has an unusual idle.

Hello Jim...
Ok, the ignition is stock...
**Have you removed the ignition cover and looked at the ignition sensor? Is resin dripping down the plate? IF so, replace the sensor, but that may or may not rectify this problem.

**YOU CAN Also remove the sensor plate and clean/inspect the pickups on the back of the sensor plate. Be sure to mark/scribe the plate prior to removal so you are back to the same timing.

**Also, check to make sure the

I also need to ask, -does your bike BACKFIRE upon Acceleration?
-does it BACKFIRE upon Deceleration?

And your idle should be set at approx. 950 rpm.

Let me know if the above has been helpful Jim...

Backfires

My '06 Bonneville America also often emits a single, very quiet backfire right after I turn it off. It doesn't do it every time, but approximately half the time. As with yours it runs beautifully and, therefore, hasn't been of concern.

Engine oil question

I was down 1/2 quart. Is it usual to burn that much oil in 700 miles or did the mechanic forget to change the oil at the 600 miles service? Husband bought a duplicate bike and he wasn't down at all. I can see being down 1/2 quart with a total mileage of 1100 miles (maybe) but not in the 700 miles since the oil change. Like a dummy I didn't check the fluids after the initial service. It looks clean, but I'm planning a 1200 mile trip next week and am not quite sure if this is normal...if you experienced guys think its okay, I guess I'll have to make room in my bags to carry oil! Any opinions appreciated...,1. Sounds like the mechanic didnt do his job right. 2. Just have your hubby do it. cheaper and you know its done right.......,,,
