Question about Harley Davidson FXD Dyna Super Glide Motorcycles

1 Answer

I have a 96 Harley Super Glide. After sitting for 2 months when accelerating motor will ping real bad. I have dumped the fuel and replaced with new. I have been told that this carb is bad for plugging air jets and causing pinging. Any ideas?? Motor and carb all original.

You're not getting enough fuel to the combustion chamber. After sitting 2 months, the fuel would deteriorate and gum up the carburetor internals. You should start by giving the carburetors a thorough cleaning and make sure all the jets are clear.

Running fuel/air too lean or maybe bad spark plug or wire. Just make sure wires are tight. Might be fouled.

I have a 2000 XL1200C and it will lose significant power after running for about 30 minutes. It has a S&S Super E carburetor and after market coil and ignition. It bogs down to almost a stop but...

Your problem could be either ignition or fuel related. The way to tell the difference is when the bike's power picks back up, does it do so with a loud "shotgun blast" out of the mufflers. If it does, it sounds like an ignition problem. Your spark quits but you're still pumping combustible fuel air mixture into the pipes. When the plugs start firing again, the combustible mixture in your pipes is ignited with a loud bang. If not, odds are that your problem is indeed fuel related. It may or may not have anything to do with temperature.

The first place I'd look is the fuel petcock. Since 1996, Harley has used a vacuum operated fuel petcock. These units have a vacuum diaphragm that opens the petcock. If the diaphragm has a small hole in it, the vacuum cannot hold it open. These things are notorious for giving trouble. You can disassemble it and replace the diaphragm easily by removing it from tank and removing the rear plate. Personally, I'd replace it with a high quality PIngel petcock. They never give a problem.

Also, if the bike does this EVERY time you ride it, loosen the fuel cap just a bit. Don't take it all the way off, just loosen it. The tank vent could be stopped up and you're building a vacuum inside your tank. Once the vacuum gets high enough, your fuel flow will be inhibited.

Ignition problems are more difficult to diagnose. They can appear and disappear in a matter of milliseconds. You can spend a LOT of time chasing an ignition problem. If you think it's heat related, remove the cover from the timer cavity on your engine. Stop by an electronics supply store and buy a small can of "component cooler" . Carry it with you when you ride. When the bike starts showing the problem, stop and spray a little of the component cooler on the ignition components inside the cavity. If this straightens out your problem, you'll probably have to replace the components.

My 2009 Dyna Super Glide Custom motorcycle has had an unusual amount of vibration overall when under way while accelerating or deaccelerating through 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears. It seems to me to be either...

You can check for a loose or broken motor mount but you need to consider how the rubber mounts work. The mounts absorb high frequency vibrations. Low frequency vibrations will be felt throughout the machine.

On most Dyna's, the bike vibrates when idling. When accelerating though the gears (and decelerating back down) if the engine rpm's gets below about 2000 rpm's, you'll feel the vibration. Once above this level, the bike smooths out due to the change in frequency of the vibrations. I have owned a '94 FXDWG since new and this is my experience with the bike.

However, if the vibration is very bad, you may need to have it looked at by a technician. You'll have to determine that for yourself.
