If this is a datsun and not a nissan name plate then you need to check and see if the speedometer cable is sticking or binding.if it is you can remove the inner speedometer cable from under the dash you have to remove the speedometer cable from the back of the speedometer head and move were you can work on it under the dash, turn the inner cable by hand to see if you can feel it bind or turn roughly before removing it,pull the inner cable out from the outer cable wipe it down and as you re-install it lube the cable with a light grease all the way to within the last 2-3" and re-install to the speedometer head and drive to see if it fixes the problem.usually this fixes the problem however if it doesn`t then the speedometer head is the problem

SOURCE: Speedometer bounces while driving

your spedo cable is probably just loose which can be fixed by tightening or replaceing. Might as well go ahead and replace it since its a 14 year old truck and its the more sure fire way to fix the bounce.

This may not be of any help but I had a 94 and the speedometer kept messing up. One day my wife was in it and she was stopped at a red light and it was bouncing around 30 MPH. She took it to the dealer we bought it from. They told me it is run off electrical signal and the alternator was bad. They changed the alternator and we never had the problem again. Just a thought check your alternator see if voltage is good are bouncing around. You can check it at the battery while it is running. I have never heard of anyone else where the alternator effected the speedometer but it is what I was told and they did change the alternator.
I will say I do not remember the MPH being 0 while running.

The speedometer bounces and sometimes does'nt work at all, and odometer hasn't changed sametime

Right off the bat it sounds like a broken speedometer cable. As the cable spins from the gearing of the transmission it is clicking against the broken part of the cable running to the speedometer gauge. The frictional clicking is what's causing your needle to bounce around. Since the cable is probably broken and cannot spin long enough to move the odometer numbers. Raise your vehicle safely and disconnect the speedometer from the transmission. then see if you can pull the cable out of the housing. If only a portion of the cable comes out, then that should answer your question. Be careful when you disconnect the speedometer cable from the transmission as not to lose any small pieces that cause the drive mechanism to work.

Speedometer needle bounce when turn signal is on.

The speedometer sensor - VSS - vehicle speed sensor is a input to the PCM - powertrain control module -engine computer . The signal from the PCM to the instrument cluster for speed info. is sent on a serial data communication network (class 2 ) I would think it would be an instrument cluster problem . Get a used one from a auto salvage yard 15 - 20 bucks an see if it fixes it . If it does ,send your's out an have it repaired .
