Emergenct brake will not hold

The linkage could need to be adjusted. Or the brake shoes inside the rear drums are worn out and need to be replaced. If you accidentally drive the brake on. It doesn't take long to wear those brake shoes out. You can normally smell them when that happens. On today's vehicles they are actually designed with 3 different brake systems. Front brake disc and rotors, rear disc and rotors, and inside the rear brake rotor their is a small brake drum where the emergency brake shoes are located. The only purpose for the shoes and drums is emergency brake only (normally). Hope this helps.

Need to dimantle and replace rear brake cylinder on my 1985 honda civic

Dont try to repair the wheel cylinders. It is much easier and not expensive to replace them . new ones are available from an aftermarket auto store. Do one side at a time so you can refer to the unstripped down side if you cant work out how it goes back together. Place a clamp or locking pliars on the rear flexible brake pipe to stop loosing all the brake fluid when the cylinders are removed. Remove the shoes and cylinder , Fit new cylinder, replace the shoes if they are soaked in brake fluid or badly worn. When you have done both sides bleed and sdjust them. make sure you top up the master cylinder with brake fluid. If this is helpful Please Vote Jeff

Just bught a 2008 lincoln MKX (huge mistake). The rear of the vehicle squeals while in motion. Quits when the brakes ar applied. HELP!! Three dealerships, no solution because it never squeals while I'm at...

Sounds a little like there are shims missing, some aftermarket shoes do not come with the shims that keep the shoes from vibrating. So they're noisy until brakes are applied and the vibration is dampened. I would assume dealer techs would notice something that simple but you never know.

After replacing front pads and rear shoes on my 2006 Nissan Sentra I still hear what sounds like worn shoes, or pads dragging when I come to a stop. Neither the pads or shoes were worn to that point when...

to my knowledge , some brake pads have metal compounds , and some are aspestos , i once used metal type on my falcon years ago and found when they got hot it was like an MTT bus braking . these type were used on taxi's for longer endurance but made noise when hot , despite being fitted correctly .

sometimes if you have touched face of pads with your hands this will also cause this noise , if so remove and lightly rub with sand paper to remove any foriegn matter and replace carefully , also brake fluid from bleeding afterwards could cause this also , did you notice if there were any little plates behind brake pads , these little flat dust plates or anti vibration plates that are behind pads some times work better with a little silicon between them and the pads , this helps a little.

also on some models i have found the rear caliper has to be screwed in and pressed also , some hand brake systems require this to un adjust the hand brake system when replacing pads .
inside the piston of the rear caliper will have a cross shape if so ! be care full if so , as one is right hand thread and one is left , if they a screwed the wrong way the piston is very hard to re-align the thread again without the chance of cross threading ..

hope this helps !

Handbrake on my HJ75 is pathetic. Is there an aftermarket solution?.

Hi,

This is quite an easy fix on these models.

The handbrake bellcrank on the back of the backing plate just needs to be adjusted.

You should only have 9 - 12 clicks on the hand brake lever when you pull it up. If you got alot more then you need to adjust it.

There currently is no aftermarket options for this sort of design, you can get better aftermarket brake shoes but thats not going to improve your handbrake.

If you still have problems after adjusting then you may need to get your rear brake hub face machined so that the brake shoe can have more surface area to grip onto.

Hope this helps

Thanks

Brakes freeze after crossing creek. house only tenth of mile from crossing. already backed off brake shoes. this only happen of course when temp is below freezing. Well also happen on going out if you do...

Glaze on the rotors or drums will do that with cheap brake pads or shoes. Take brake cleaner and clean all parts first then see what happens. If the same problem takes on again replace the pads or shoes and get the rotors or drums remachined

Im looking to buy a repair manual for my 2005 vento v thunder.

May I suggest a trip to your local library. Cycle repair books should be in 646 stacks of reference. Otherwise you can Google the Clymer service manuals.

How to fit handbrake shoes on a 98 toyota celica

Are you saying you only had front brakes with the back brakes removed? The hand brakes would have been null. How could it pass inspections ?
A quick trip to the library will help. Ask for the auto service manual.
You can also check eBay for a Service Manual.
