2000 Mercury 40 HP outboard motor will not start, how do I trouble, for electircal and fuel problem, where would I get troubleshooting instructions? Thank you

right, Fiirst establish what is wrong.
1, is there fuel? check the spark plugs after trying to start, they should be slightly wet and smells of fuel.

2. is there spark? take out a spark plug leaving attached to wire and earth ( use a rubber handled tool or you might get a shock)the plug where it is meant to be screwed into the motor, look for a bright blue spark.

It is from here you will track down your problem.
If no fuel.....check all fuel lines then filter then fuel pump then carby bulb on bottom of carby this is the reservoir that has a float that moves a pin to stop and let in fuel in as it rises and falls. clean everything as you go. take off whole carby and soak overnight in a carby cleaner product. if you locate a prob as you go it might solve your problem but while you are at it you may as well service it at the same time. Get new gaskets or make your own from gasket paper or use gasket glues. put it all back together this should only take 30min to do as long as you have right tools. excluding soaking time.

If no spark, this is harder to diagnose as there are more fiddly parts, volt meter volt meter volt meter.......everything! check wires everywhere for loose connections, electric start? cdi unit small black box? wires coming from flywheel ,these send a charge to battery when motor is going and a charge to spark plugs via coils or cdi.

My 2001 115/HP Johnson outbd was starting hard last weekend. By Sunday it started to run ruff but would clear at higher power setting. When I pulled the boat out of the water I lowered the motor to drain...

The lower unit and oil draining is in no way related to the motor. They are two completly separate units. The g/box is totally self-contained.It sounds more like you have an engine problem. You don't say if the motor is carby or efi(fuel injection). If carby,The carby's are playing up.Be it float levels, stuck needle and seat.A prob. But not a big one.If it's an efi motor it needs to be serviced and so does a carby motor. You don,t have a big prob, just a service one.Hope this helps you

I replaced the spark plug on grass cutter and it starts but wont stay running

sounds like flooding, carby service maybe required I'm guessing that it has been sitting for some time ,fuel has a tendency to go like jelly then hard like super glue and it blocks all jets
all machines that are small and that don't get used often should have a fuel turn off tap so you can run it dry (carby empty of fuel) meaning, whilst running, turn tap off, engine dies, carby empty no problems!!! it seems to be a common prob with small engines and all service centers are praying on this happening ,hope it helps if you are able put a fuel tap on approx cost $4 or get someone to do it ?

My car wont start, my dad says it may be the fuel pump, how do i tell?

Get under the rear end of car with a test light and fit the clip to the clean part of the chassis and test the wires to the pump (going into the pump)
1 should light up ..
THEN go to the fuel rail or carby if carby type and take off the feed pipe and get someone to turn on the key and the fuel should come out of the pipe ,,so then you know you have a problem in the pump if no fuel comes out or the carby or fuel rail if it does come out ...

How do i fix my carb in my 1989 toyota pick up its not getting any gas somewhere

Are you sure its the Carby as it could be the fuel pump as they have a lot of problems with the pumps and so remove the puel pipe from carby and spin over engine.. If still no fuel then go to the fuel filter and if dirty replace it (it should be on the chassis or under the bonnet and try again if still no go then try tipping a small amount down the carby throught and then start if starts the carby float or main jet is faulty /but fuel must come out the fuel lines first
before carby faulty job...

96' Corolla 1.6 Engine running erratic when cold.

Take the cover off when its cold before starting - give a press 1/2 way on the pedal and release. Check that the choke plate flap is now covering the carby inlet. If it is, then the auto choke is ok. If its manual choke - check that it works on and off.

If the choke does not close when cold take it to a car by repair shop for servicing.

If the choke is working ok then open the choke flap and move the accelerator linkage at the carby, in the same direction as it moves when you press the pedal - you should see/hear a jet of fuel being sprayed into the carby down beside the acccelerator flap.
If no fuel there you may have a prob with your 'pump' on the carby or maybe the fuel pump from the tank is faulty or blocked.

There may be a problem with dirt stuck in your jets -if you can't strip it your self, take the carby off and in for service.

As you need 3 things for the motor to work - fuel - spark from the coil and airflow. check these out one at a time

ps. we have Kangaroos here in Aus

Wont take fuel when first started when cold

ruff guess from the sounds of it your fuel line going to either filter, fuel rail(if multi point) or carby will have a small crack or hole you should see moisture round it when it is running but if carbyed the needle and seat may not be closed properly as ive had the same probs in me old xf 250 cross flow

Daewoo Lanos 1999 Not starting

Usually this is because the carburettor dries out and there is a needle and seat (internal on carby) that can get stuck and not let fuel in. Usually from a little dust water and general **** that comes with the fuel. Id spray the carby out with carby cleaner, remove the fuel line from it and spray out the fuel bowl. Possibly even open up the carby and completely clean it, but only if you are confident on putting it back together. But try just spraying it and cleaning it first, then tip probably a quarter (1/4) of a cup of petrol in the hole in the carby and try starting it, this should make it run. Maybe a little rough at first, but you may need to clean the carby a couple of times, and will need to pump fresh fuel from the tank. So good luck and hope it helps.
