same as any gear box, drain out old, refill with new. use recomended type and weight. i recomend AM'S oil. i put some in the 6 speed on my harley nighttrain and it shifts smoother than silk now.
Most everything you would check the oil with the engine OFF. If it was running, shut it off and let it stand for a moment so the oil has time to run back into the oil pan.
As to what oil, some vehicle specifics would help to determin a good recomendation.
If your oil is not low and your oil light is flashing I recomend you find someone who can do an oil pressure test, those vehicles have been known to clog up the oil pickup screen and starve the engine for oil. if your car has the 2.0 liter engine I recomend 5w 30 oil its good for all temp ranges.
Should be using 10w30 or 10w40. You probably have a lifter knocking. Instead of using 5 quarts of oil replace one of the quarts with an oil additive. I use a quart of Lucas Oil in my vehicles every oil change. The stuff works wonders!
Check the engine oil level. if low add 1/2 quart and re check untill full. GO get oil change. DO NOT RUN if oil is not showing on the dip stick. The oil weight is in the owners manual.
there should be a label stating the oil type somewhere on the engine or cap or owners manual, if not most manufacturers recomend a 30 weight oil. be sure to drain out the old stuff first.
