2001 Ford coachman motor home

I have a problem with the speedometer, as soon as you start the unit , the speedometer needle goes to 60 kms, and stays there, when you shut the motor off and tap the outer cover it goes back down to 0. I can not find a cable so I am guessing that it is electrical , and possibly a sensor from the transmission, I don't have the manual for the unit to check the troubleshooting side of things, can you please help me out here,.

Speedometer is sticking and then jumping up every couple of mph

The speedometer in this truck is electronic, the needle is moved by a tiny electric motor called the speedometer needle stepper motor, a stepper motor is a DC motor than can hold one position rather than just rotate when power is applied to it. You will need to remove the instrument cluster from the truck and send it in to a Ford electronics repair center that repairs speedometers.

Why does the tach and speedometer now spike when starting engine?

depends. newer vehicles do this just for effect, basically for you to go "ooooohhh" however with older vehicles ( pre 2006) this could be a code that the computer system is giving you, if the needle spikes all the way to the end of the speedometer/tachometer then back down to zero, its most likely effect. but if the needle spikes to 3 numbers (ex-90, 60, 30. then back to zero) its trying to tell you theres something wrong under the hood, could be as simple as a fuse or 02 sensor...

Is speedometer connected to Tranny?

There is a vehicle speed sensor on top of the rear differential, this sensor is also for the anti-lock brakes. Sometimes you just remove it and clean it (it's magnetic) and may start working again otherwise you have to buy new. Yes, this sensor will affect the trany shifting.

Speedometer does not function properly. needle

A faulty vehicle speed sensor will cause this.
It's mounted on the back end of the transmission where the drive shaft slides into, near the top, it's just held in with a bolt, on the right side of the tranny, also has a wire connection.
