Your fuel sending unit in tank is bad,may be incorparated with fuel pump or by itself.Car isn't going to drink gas that fast unless leaking. If tank reads a half, fill up to see if it's really half empty, and if it is half full, then your driving a gas hog.
Hi If your freelander has the k series engine The most common problem is the head gasket. Usually goes at 40,000 to 50,000 miles. Also the gasket usually blows in such a way that the engine oil goes into the exspansion tank. But firstly is there any water on the end of the dipstick ? ( it will look milky ). These days most garages have a tester to see if head gasket is leaking consists of a special fluid which changes colour when compression gases are in the coolant ( a sample of gas from coolant tank is taken with a suction tool ) If you have no leaks anywhere, the gasket may be gone in a way that the coolant goes into the combustion chamber and out the exhaust ( usually you would get white smoke ) I hope i have been of some help to you, John ( South Wales UK )
this is a evaperativ emissons code on newer vehic when filling up the tank if you round off dollars your corcoal canester is bad it is safe to stop pumping gas when the pump stops if you dont round dollars you should also check gas cap seal and make sure you click it three time when tighting if this dose not help you might have have a small leak in the tank seals or a bad purge vavle
Try getting your gas some where else and make sure that the octaine of the gas you are getting is at least 88 or higher. Freestars run much better on higher octaine fuel plus you will get better millage.
And when you get gas look to see if there is a tanker truck filling their tanks. If there is go some where else because you will be getting some of the gunk that normally is settled in the bottom of their tanks.
Every filling station has gunk in the bottom of their tanks, Water,Rust,Dirt, you name it it's in there.
They will tell you that they don't but beleive me it's in there.
I ran service stations for years, I've never seen a tank yet that didn't.
you might try looking to see if the filler tube is cracked and leaking if it is you could replace it and that will take care of the check engine lite depending on what code is being set
you dont say if you physically checked the filler hose. You might want to look at it close. my experience has been till there is enough gas in the tank to create a back pressure what little will leak out of the tube is negliable fluid will follow path of least resistance, so when filling till there is a back pressure you wont see leaks.
