What's the voltage reading at the battery with the engine running ? 13 to 14.1 volts ? If not, it's not charging .Sounds to me like it's not charging ! Is there battery voltage at the heavier gage wire on the back of the alternator ? Does the battery symbol light on the dash work ?
Test the alternator. The battery light is for the charging system. Once the charging system is working with the engine running, the light should go off. If your light stays on with engine running, the alternator may need service or replacement.
To test the charging system, just put a voltmeter on the battery with engine running. The voltmeter should register at least 13.5 volts- alternator is charging. If you only show battery voltage with engine running, like 12.2-12.8 volts, the alternator or charging system is not working. The battery light should be on to signify this.
the alternator charges the battery thru the heavy lead on the back of the alternator that goes to the battery. make sure it is clean and tight. the alternator output should be 13-15 volts with engine running.
COULD BE LOOSE ALTERNATOR BELT.TRY ADJUSTING ALTENATOR BELT SEE IF HELPS PROBLEM.IF ALTERNATOR NOT CHARGING BATTERY THE ECM CANT WORK NONE OF ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEMS.IF ALTERNATOR DRIVE BELT TENSION CORRECT REMOVE ALTERNATOR TAKE TO ANY AUTO PARTS STORES THEY WILL CHECK IT OUT SEE ITS WORKING OR YOU CAN TAKE DIGITAL OR ANALOG VOLT METER TO CHECK ALTERNATOR OUT PUT AT BATTERY WITH ENGINE RUNNING SHOULD HAVE 13.5 - 14.5 VOLTS IF ALTERNATOR IE CHARGING THE BATTERY.
one way to find out is when engine running detach the position cable from the battery if stall means your alternator is not working if still runs then the battery need to be changed
If your battery warning light is on, then your alternator is NOT working okay. Rather, maybe the alternator DOES work, but the battery light can also come on if your battery won't charge.
Put a voltmeter to the battery terminals when the engine is running and rev the engine to a medium idle. Battery charging, (engine running) it should be about 13.5-14.5 volts. Engine off fully charged battery voltage should be 12.6 volts.
Quick test-engine running, disconnect the positive battery terminal from the battery- if the engine dies, there is still an alternator problem.
sound like alternator is not charging battery.hook a digital voltmeter to battery.crank engine up.battery voltage should be 13.5 volts to 14.5 volts.with engine running.if not alternator not charging.i warn people head of time.turn off radio before disconnecting negative battery cable.so you wont loose radio playing code.do this if you are going to remove alternator your self.besure let the auto parts place check the alternator first to make it is faulty.if alternator good you have blown fuse or link and the alternator electrical connectors could be damaged.
sounds like the alternator is shot and is not supplying sufficient power to the engine or even enough to charge the battery, try replacing it, and you said the dash light for the alternator is on so its most likely the alternator
