The engine on a 1996 Saturn SL uses SAE 5w-30 engine oil. The recommended oil-change interval for this engine is every 3,000 miles or three months, whichever comes sooner.

Depending on your climate...also you can read your owners manual for weight recommendation...ie 10W30 or 5W30...All brands of premium detergent oil meet or exceed your Saturn factory specs...For most uses, the fully synthetic oils lubricate and perform better than conventional oils...The synthetic is also recommended for cold and warm climates. My choices are Mobil 1 10W30, and Castrol synthetic 10W30...both exceed your Saturn specs...and will provide the best start up, and mileage performance. I have studied motor oils for over 45 years...Castrol and Mobil 1 are still the best choices including cost...Hope this helps you care for your Quality Saturn...many years of trouble free ownership...

Potentially bad news; when ours started getting quirky, delaying before engaging, it finally lost reverse too.
~$4000 from a Saturn shop or $3000 for independent. After good referrals, we used the independent and the tranny held for 27,000 miles until the engine blew at 56,700 miles; it dropped a rod cap.
I 'sold' it to my son for $1.
The worst car I have ever owned and my first US car in 35 years- it is also my LAST.

The oil filter is most easy to get from under the vehicle. If you have a jack, lift the front passenger side of the car enough to crawl behind the front passenger tire. The oil filter will be on the back of the engine right above the drive axle.
ATTN: The oil filter can be easily mistaked for the transmission filter which is located on the front of the engine on the drivers side.
I am unsure the the exact specification of oil capacity. You can find it in the owners manual or ask the guy at the auto parts store they can look it up. I would put in 3.5,start it let it run for ten seconds then shut it off and check the oil level and add if needed. It wont take more than 4.5
