2001 Volkswagen Golf Logo
Anonymous Posted on Jan 30, 2011

I have a 2001 VW golf auto with a 1.8L turbo engine. it starts and runs fine for about 5 to 10 seconds and then starts running badly and dies. when running badly, it does not respond to an increase in the accelerator pedal. i suspect the ECU is malfunctioning, but the dealer states it can't be tested for malfunction, only eliminating all other sensors and probable causes. if those appear good, then it must be the ECU and replace it. This does not sound like a good engineering solution. Surely, a test exists for the proper operation of a ECU. can someone help? Also I have confirmed the engine speed sensor ,camshaft sensor, coolant temperture sensor, intake air sensor are all o.k. I have ordered a MAF sensor as a last ditch effort to fix this problem short of buying the ECU/ cost of $500 or more. again i need HELP.

Sometime unplugging sensors is a good way to find a bad one. If the incorrect reading is being supplied to the ecm, sometimes it can't tell.
When a sensor is disconnected, the ecm knows and uses a default value.
Obviously this doesn't work with the crank sensor.

One thing to check is the connector at the coolant resevoir. Sometimes coolant will migrate through the wires and cause all kinds of trouble.

Hi, i've been told the turbo on my 2006 !.8 Golf TDI has blown and need a new one. How much would a new one cost please? Thanks

Best place to start is eBay vw turbos can range from $250.00 to $700.00 but it depends on your model and engine size. You can look up vw golf websites and I believe you can even by them cheaper through club web sites
