The amber SERVICE VEHICLE SOON indicator is an alert to the driver whenever there are specific current codes stored in the BCM or in the event of a loss of Class 2 serial data.

If your vehicle has a check engine light ,it doesn't have service engine soon .One or the other .

If the Service Engine Soon indicator light stays lit after you've started the engine, the On Board Diagnostics system (OBD) has detected a malfunction of the vehicle emissions control system. Contact your authorized dealer as soon as possible.
If indicator light is blinking, an engine misfire may be occurring, which could damage your catalytic converter. Drive in a moderate fashion (avoid heavy acceleration and deceleration), and have your vehicle serviced immediately.*
The Service Engine Soon indicator light illuminates when the ignition is first turned on (prior to engine start) in order to test the bulb, as well as indicate whether the vehicle is ready for Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) testing.
Normally, the Service Engine Soon light will stay on until the engine is cranked, then turn itself off if no malfunctions are present. However, if after 15 seconds this light blinks eight times, it means that the vehicle is not ready for I/M testing.Check this link out Gary.

You need to have it checked for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes to see what the problem is ,then diagnosed , then fixed ! Then the light's will go off ! This means taking it to a qualified repair shop .

The IPC illuminates the SERVICE VEHICLE SOON message in the DIC when the powertrain control module (PCM) detects certain malfunctions that are not related to the emissions system. The IPC receives a class 2 message requesting illumination from the PCM.

Since the "Service Engine Soon" Light is primarily an emissions monitor there is no need to panic. Unlike the overheat or charging system red warning lights that require an immediate shutdown of the engine, this one is advisory and is yellow or orange. Even though it doesn't indicate the car is likely to quit, it is calling out for help. Think of the "Service Engine Soon" lamp as if it were the glowing tip of a cigarette. Your car is polluting as well as performing below its design potential.

Probably just a wheel sensor out. It will be fine to drive that far and back. You wont have tracton control or antilock brakes. Meaning that if you slam on the brakes the tire can lock up and skid. When the abs is out it reverts to the old braking system that they used in all vehicles for decades.

I've seen the light twice on my Grand Am, and both times it was a burned out headlight. Check all your lights and bulbs to see if any are burned out.

If that's not the problem, go to a place that will scan your car's computer error codes for you. I go to AutoZone and they do it for free. I hear Advanced Auto Parts may, also.

What does "ets" mean?

I am assuming its not the service engine soon light it is probably the service vehicle soon light, There are 2 lights service vehicle soon upper left side, and service engine soon upper right side.

When all these come on at the same time it is the wheel bearing sensor. Usually the wheel bearing needs to be replaced which houses the sensor. A sure way to check is to press your sls button by your shifter and see if the light goes out, If it does not, u will need to have a wheel bearing put in.

the light means there is a problem in he vehicle (not the engine) this could be like a bad bulb, abs unit airbag, gas gauge, tire pressure. scan the body contol module should tell you why the light is on.

what light is flashing with this Service Vehicle Soon message? (Mine had the high beam light flashing and it turned out to be a head light.)

99 - 04 grand am.

I had the "service vehicle soon" light come twice with in 1 year. First the heald light bulbs were gone. Replaced the head light bulbs and after 2 starts the "service vehicle soon" light was gone.

The second time the DRL - #194 amber bulbs were gone. Replaced these and the "service vehicle soon" light was gone after 2 starts. The DRLs are housed in the headlamp housing, the tiny bulbs beside the head light.
