check fuel pump pressure- fuel filter --air filter --egr valve if carboned up clean or replace and cat converter feel the exhaust if feels restricted may be clogging up
If it is getting too much fuel you should be able to pull a vac hose such as the one to the PCV valve and make the engine speed up. If it is too rich could be a fuel pressure regulator or injector problem. Pull the pump relay and see if it starts then runs out of fuel.
you need to adjust your idle screw on your carb i could tell ya how on that type of car but your running to high of an idle and flooding your cylinders thats y it is idleing rough and you can smell the gas, adjust your idle screw back a little and then you might want to check your plugs and make sure you didnt fowl and of them with it running rich
It sounds like it may be your O2 sensor because if it is not working properly, the engine cannot determine how much fuel to ingest which would cause rough idling.
sometimes a bad 02 sensor causes a fuel smell from the exhaust, or you can just remove and check the sensor. if its really black "like charcoal" you might wana get it changed, also checked the wires on it and make sure they're not torn or anything. have scanned to find problem code if check engine light is on. good luck!!
Try replacing the Throttle Positioning Sensor Have the codes checked You may need to clean the Mass Air Flow Sensor this is best done by a professional as it contains some very sensitive wires and they are easily broken The MAF is very expensive to replace
It sounds like your engine is gummed up. I recommend that you get two bottles of a fuel additive called seafoam and dump them into the gas tank. In no time, your engine will be purring again.
Sounds like the temp sensor went bad. Making the engine run rich.
Good Luck
