each can fail and do .
the service manual covers all this, for sure and only it does.

the starter permissive's are. (switches) "a generic answer"
clutch engaged
neutral (transmission )
kick stand up.
battery good now weak, lugs tight and not rusty.
key good & switch (key)
starter relay good.
starter good (means with solenoid too)
engine not seized.
we use a volt meter to find this, easy it is.
the point of failure is found every time,.with a meter.
buy a battery trickle charger [ebay has them]they have a setup for just that purpose & it maintains the battery at a premuim level
thus extending its life span & no more hard starting dramas
