If your key unlocks the ignition lock cylinder but it wont turn far enough to get to the crank position, you may have a bad ignition switch. The switch is NOT the part near the steering wheel where you insert the key, there is a long linkage rod that runs down the column to the switch. The switch itself is located on top of the steering column up under the dash near the brake pedal. It is mounted with slotted holes for adjustment on a metal bracket with a plastic body (usually white plastic) I think it has two separate plugs with several wires in each one.
It could also be the lock cylinder/rod mechanism in the upper part of the column is binding. you do not want to attempt to take that mechanism apart if you don't have the special tools to do it properly.
Why don't you just buy a new ignition switch and put it back together the way it was originally designed instead of "rigging" something that will probably end up burning your car to the ground?
Hope this helps all.... If the key is stuck (won't come out) and the column is NOT locked, on the gear shift there is a plastic sleeve. Put the gear shift in park...slide your hand below the knob and pull that sleeve up! Presto!!! it locks in park and the key comes out. I just put all the stuff i took apart back together... the other solutions may work but this is the first step to check... no tools and you know right away... AJay
The item at the end of the rod is the ignition switch. what you changed was the lock assembly. (you turn the key, it moves the rod and puts the switch in the correct position to do what you want it to)
My schematic lies to me a lot but here it is: dark blue:goes to gauge, dark green with red stripe is pump power and black is ground. Hot wire should have 12v, dark blue should have pulsing voltage and black should be absolute ground.
I know this problem all to well, and in the Ford dealer I worked for I repaired dozen's of these column problems exactly like yours, u will need to replace the rack and pinion gear for the linkage from the lock cylinder to the ignition switch at the bottom of column, it is a tedious job that requires taking the column completely apart up top, and it takes me about 2 hours if i am lucky, u need special tools as well, u can improvise if you are sharp on this stuff.
I used a combination of the above on my 2003 Town and Country but I did it the easy way. I simply placed a screwdriver in the ignition where the key goes and I tapped the screwdriver with a hammer (LIGHTLY). Apparently, this freed the stuck pins and everything works fine now. I then sprayed WD40 into the ignition so it will, hopefully, not stick again.
hello. i had this problem once. for me it was only a $40.00 part. you have to change the key ignition switch. you will end having a different aftermarket key if you dont have one already. I hated giving up that nice gold original key for a black plastic key. the chip on your key must make contact with two smal hair size wire and one or maybe both are cut or broke apart. you will see this when you take that old switch off. let me know if this helps at [email protected]
well i have the same problem my Left side rear window came off the track so i took the door panel off. The door panel comes off by taking two srews out that are behind the lower handel off the door. The upper silver handel has a black peace off plastic behind it it is held on by clips. also you have to take the little peace of the lock thing that pops up. After you get the two screws out grad the door panel below the speaker and give it a good pull once it pops out you can take the peace out thats behing the silver handle. After you get the door panel to pop out you have to left it up. I think i need new parts so i will take it to the dealer. the door works with a pully and a cable the cable in my door is all twisted up.
