The latest information that I have is for a 2002 model but it still may be the same on your bike. The neutral indicator switch is located behind the front pulley cover plate. To get the plate off, you are probably going to have to remove the rear brake master cylinder and the rear brake pedal. Take the bolts out that hold the plate on and remove the plate. You'll see the front belt pulley. The switch should be towards the upper right of the centerline of the pulley. You may have to take the pulley off to get access to the switch.

To get the front pulley off, you need some special tools. You'll need a socket that will fit the large nut and you need a tool to hold the sprocket while you take the nut off then again when you put the nut back on and torque it to specs. The nut has left hand threads in it.

To test to find out whether the switch is bad or the bulb, remove the wire from the switch. Turn on the ignition and ground the wire. If the neutral light lights up, the switch is probably bad. If the light does not light, the indicator bulb is bad or you have a wiring problem somewhere. You can replace the switch simply by screwing the old one out and screwing a new one in.

If this does not solve the problem, there is a pin that is in the transmission shifter cam that the switch senses to tell if you are in neutral. This pin could have come out of the cam but this is very unlikely. But, if it has, it is a major disassembly of the transmission to repair this.

Just bought a 07 caliber, I put 25 miles on it, parked it, went to start it everything lights up, won't even make a clicking noise to the started. I've checked the battery, pulled cables off tried all

Did you try starting in neutral? Could be the neutral safety switch. Try shifting thru the gears with your foot on the brake and turning the key. If it tries to start in another gear, adjust or replace the neutral safety switch. If not that, is there a security light flashing? Could be a problem with the security system.

I have a 2007 sportster that seems to skip neutral goin from first to second gear and from second to first both with the engine on and off. The gage N light doesnt even flash when passing through those...

Hey chris , i wouldnt worry about the neutral light coming on when your shifting thru the gears on acceleration. If your light isnt working or you missing neutral , try adjusting your clutch. Then if that isnt the probably find your neutral switch connector and ground the terminals together and your light should pop on . If not replace the switch. Im not sure what gauge you have there might be bulb for the neutral light also .

'01 Grand Caravan 120,000 miles. Frequent but intermitente problem: When in drive, gear indicator shows "D" put it in Park, feel it shift but indicator still says "D" shift it into Reverse, shifts and...

Did they change the BCM or PCM? The BCM doesn't have anything to do with the gauges or transmission shifting or the PRNDL lights. The transmission range sensor is where I would start. This sends a signal to the PCM, from the PCM to the PRNDL lights. The PCM also reads other sensor for shifting. I would have to put it on a scanner to see what was going on. Three things I would definitely check are the range sensor, wires from the range sensor to the PCM and the PCM.

Replace neutral safty swich

The neutral safety switch only prevents the driver from cranking the engine in gear, and it turns on the backup lights when you are in reverse.
If you are having a problem with the performance of the transmission I doubt it has anything to do with that switch.

My 1999 Mercury Mountainer wont start I've replaced the battery, starter and selenoid, alternator but it still wont start when I turn the key the gauge lights come on but it does not make any noise not even...

Since your lights don't dim when you turn the key, the starter isn't getting power at all. There is a large cable that runs from the battery to the starter, it should have battery voltage at all times. If it does, then check the smaller wire at the top of the solenoid, it should have battery voltage only when you turn the key to start. If that wire doesn't have voltage when you turn the key to start, look under the dash on the steering column. There should be a thick wire (about 12 gauge) that is red with a light blue stripe. This is the start wire. Test it for voltage when you turn the key to start. If you don't get voltage there, replace the ignition switch. If you do get voltage there, try starting it in neutral. The gear selector switch interrupts the starter circuit if the car is in gear so you can't grind the starter in gear or start it in gear. If this switch gets a bad spot on the contact, it can keep it from starting. It will only allow the starter to work in park and neutral. If it starts in neutral, then you need to replace the gear selector switch. If you get voltage at the ignition wire under the dash and it won't start in neutral, then you need to trace out the wire from the starter because it has a break in it and will have to be replaced.

Starting fault

There are two safety switches that you may need to test. 1) Neutral safety switch- this switch is what tells the bike that it's in neutral and allows the starter to engage. 2) Kickstand safety switch- this switch will not allow the bike to run in gear if the kickstand is down. My initial guess is the neutral safety switch. If the neutral safety switch is bad, then you will not be able to start the bike with the kickstand down because the bike thinks that it's in gear (even if in neutral). This also may explain why the initial intermitent problem of not starting when warm since the metal contacts will expand and possibly not make contact when warmed up. Are you trying to start the bike with the kickstand up or down? If it were the kickstand safety switch, the bike would probably start okay and then die when you put it in gear.

Clutch or Transmission?

Whining noise is worn gears or low on transmission fluid. It after reading your post, sorry to say but you were low on transmission fluid and your transmission needs to be replaced. You gear box has seized and every time you release the clutch even in neutral will kill your engine. The transmission shaft may have seized on the bearings in the transmission case, regardless you need a new or rebuilt transmission. Good luck friend and sorry for the bad news. Keep me posted.

Could be a wiring issue if you already replaced the speed sensor. I believe there are 2 speed sensors on that tranny though, and both are usaully replaced at the same time.
