Question about Ducati 750 SS Motorcycles

Has good spark from ignition leads to plugs. intermitant firing on one cylinder. then will only run on one cylinder fouling the other spark plug.............

Hi, Bruceunswort and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel mixture too rich or enrichner left out too long.
2. Incorrect spark plugs for your kind of service.
3. Piston rings badly worn or broken.
4. Valve guides are badly worn and/or seals worn, crushed or have come off valve guide and pump oil through it.

SOURCE: Rear cylinder not firing

The first thing I would do is replace the spark plugs again. You can foul a plug and it will cause you more problems than you can ever imagine. I see you have done all the logical things that I would recommend but I did not see you have replaced the plugs after the 200 miles. You would be surprised at how many times a $2.00 part can cause fits beyond belief.

you can probable kick it faster with the plug out of the cylnder, or the plug that doesnt spark is bad.
Make sure you always ground it, if you dont it can damage the electrics

FAZER 600 1999 NOT FIRING ON 1 AND 2 CYLINDERS


Hi, Mgd60 and the usual suspects are:
1. Fouled spark plugs.
2. Severely discharged or a damaged battery, should have 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
3. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
4. Loose connection at ignition coil or plug between ignition sensor and module.
5. Spark plug cables in bad condition, shorting / leaking, spark plug cable connections loose.
6. Faulty ignition coil or ignition / electronic module
7. Faulty CKP, CMP, or BAS sensor.
8. Faulty ignition switch.

could be a spark plug failing under the higher compression of the increased rpms
start by changing the plug and or HT lead or coil if independent of the other cylinder

Hi Anonymous, on twin cams make sure both spark plugs are in heads and use a grounded third plug to check for spark or hold spark plug cable close to spark plug in head. If still not getting spark the usual suspects are:
1. Fouled spark plugs.
2. Battery voltage below 8.7 volts, loose or broken battery cables especially ground cable to frame.
3. Loose connection at ignition coil or plug between ignition sensor and module.
4. Spark plug cables in bad condition, shorting / leaking, spark plug cable connections loose.
5. Faulty ignition coil or ignition / electronic module
6. Failed CKP, CMP, MAP or BAS sensor.
7. Faulty ignition switch.

2005 Jeep Cherokee miss fire on fifth cylinder


Pull the spark plug to see if it is oil fouled, preventing firing. If it is, you may have a mechanical problem in cylinder 5- do a compression test to check for low compression in that cylinder.

If plug is clean or only showing black sooty deposits from unburned gas, the problem could be either in the secondary ignition (plug, plug wire, coil), or an injection problem. Try a known good spark plug and spark plug wire, also a known good coil, if plug and wire wasn't it. If checking for spark, you need to see a blue snapping spark when cranking engine to verify good ignition. A weak or orange spark, or intermittent spark is an ignition problem.
To check injection circuit on number 5, you can purchase an inexpensive "noid light" at parts stores. It plugs into the injector connector, and if circuit is good the noid light will be blinking when cranking the engine over. It is rare for injectors to fail, but if circuit is good and no gas is getting into the cylinder, injector may be bad or plugged.

No,4 plug not fireing changed plug wires.new coil.plug ran good for 100 miles then 4 stop again


You would need to figure out if it is a problem inside the cylinder or with something like the crank-cam sensor firing the coil. I would change the plug again to see if it works for a few days.
Could be a problem with the fuel injector or a vac leak if the plug is firing but no power from that cylinder.

Hi Dale,

Several factors can contribute to spark plug fouling:

- The air/fuel ratio may be too rich as a result of incorrect carburetor adjustment or a poorly performing fuel injection system.
- Worn piston rings or valve seals may allow too much oil to leak into the combustion chamber, leading to oil fouling.
- The ignition system may not be performing properly.
- Prolonged idling or continuous low-speed driving may keep the spark plug from reaching its optimum operating temperature. Using too cold a spark plug can lead to the same problem.
- A dirty air cleaner can create a too-rich condition which can lead to fouling.

Have each of the above checked and corrected.

Fuel, oil and carbon fouling can all be the result of different causes but, once a spark plug is fouled, it will not provide adequate voltage to the firing tip and that cylinder will not fire properly.

In many cases, the spark plug cannot be cleaned sufficiently to restore normal operation. Hence, I always recommend that a plug be replace, once it becomes fouled.

Vmax 2002 full power model only fireing on 3 cylinders checked coil / leads / plugs and all wiring connectors but no spark to cylinder could this be a pick up coil or a faulty cdi unit


Hi, John_mvc and the usual suspects are:
1. Fouled spark plugs.
2. Severely discharged or a damaged battery should have 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a preliminary reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage the battery is faulty and must be replaced, AGM batteries fail in this scenario more so than lead acid batteries.
3. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
4. Loose connection at ignition coil or plug between ignition sensor and module.
5. Spark plug cables in bad condition, shorting/leaking, spark plug cable connections loose check for spark leakage in the dark.
6. Faulty ignition coil or electronic control module.
7. Faulty CKP, CMP, or BAS sensor.
8. Faulty ignition switch.
9. Tilt sensor needs a reset.
10. Security alarm failing to disarm needs reset

Rear cylinder not firing


The first thing I would do is replace the spark plugs again. You can foul a plug and it will cause you more problems than you can ever imagine. I see you have done all the logical things that I would recommend but I did not see you have replaced the plugs after the 200 miles. You would be surprised at how many times a $2.00 part can cause fits beyond belief.
