Question about 2005 BMW R 1150 GS Adventure

2 Answers

It's been -20 for days but was warmer today. Electrics look fine and there is gas. Side stand is UP. Kill switch in neutral position. When I push the start button it just goes click click click (very loudly). Lights/horn etc go so should be enough go in battery to start.

Hi, this sounds like a discharged battery, however to ilimenate the starter solenoide bridge the 2 thick wires with some insulated pliers, you will get quite a large spark when you do this but this is normal , if the engine turns over this will prove there is suficiant charge in the battery, you dont need the ignition turned on to do this however the engine wont start unless it is, without the key on you will have no other drain on the battery, so it would be most interesting if you tried it first without the ignition on ,

Starter solenoid has frozen up or needs lubricating on the dog wheel. Let it warm up a bit and try again, if the motor spins but doesn't engage, clean and lubricate the dog. If the motor doesn't turn at all and the solenoid is working, replace the brushes in the motor.
Hope that helps.

Hi, Darrensemail the ignition circuit cut-off system comprising of the side stand switch, clutch switch and neutral switch has the following functions:
a. It prevents starting when the transmission is in gear and the side stand is up, but the clutch lever is not pulled.
b. It prevents starting when the transmission is in gear and the clutch lever is pulled, but the side stand is still down.
c. It cuts the running engine when the transmission is in gear and the side stand is moved down.
Periodically check the operation of the ignition circuit cut-off system according to the following.
With the engine turned off:
1. Move the side stand down.
2. Make sure that the engine stop switch is set to "RUN"
3. Turn the key to "ON".
4. Shift the transmission into the neutral position.
5. Push the start switch if the engine does not start the neutral switch may be faulty.
With the engine still running:
6. Move the side stand up.
7. Keep the clutch lever pulled.
8. Shift the transmission into gear.
9. Move the side stand down if the engine does not stall you may have a faulty side stand switch.
After the engine has stalled:
10. Move the side stand up.
11. Keep the clutch lever pulled.
12. Push the start switch if the engine does not start you may have a faulty clutch switch.
This check is most reliable if performed with a warmed-up engine.

Have you done all the regular stuff? There are a number of interlock safeties on this bike. To start, key on of course, side stand up or in neutral, if in gear and clutch is engaged, it will not start, if the kill switch is in the off position, it will not start. Said differently, you must have the key in the on position, side stand retracted, transmission in neutral, clutch pulled in, kill switch in run position. Still will not start, check the start solenoid for proper operation. If that works ... suspect the starter motor.

My zephyr 1100 has no spark at the plugs. The bike has been parked up for a few months - it ran fine before then. The battery is showing 12.5v and all other electrics work. I disconnected the side stand...

Im not sure of the exact wiring , but the side switch doesnt cut the motor in neutral, so it loops through the neutral light.
You said front brake switch has 12 v, this is correct.
There is another switch on the clutch, which also works in conjunction with the side stand.
I would be checking the ignition and kill switches

Cant get my 50cc scooter to fire up-no spark. any

  • Do you see spark? If not, check the side stand kill switch. It kills the engine so that you don’t start out with the side stand down. If broken or out of adjustment, it would kill the spark. Check for a broken wire at the side stand switch and coupler. Try moving the side stand kill switch by hand. If that doesn’t work then wire a jumper around the switch to bypass it.
  • Is the handlebar kill switch on? Is it shorted out?
  • Check the fuses.
  • Check the operation of the ignition switch and all kill switches with a volt ohmmeter. Check the wiring harness. Did a wire come unplugged? Are all wires clean and with solid connections? Any abraded or pinched wires?
  • Is the bike in neutral and the neutral light is lit up? If no neutral light, check the neutral switch and neutral switch wire on center or side casing.
  • If still no spark, get CDI system and coils checked at the dealers shop.

Alri i was driving my kx250 and the engine died out on me an now it wont start atal

  • Drain the carb. It is probably filled with water that condensated in the gas tank.
  • Start with a new spark plug. Do you see spark? If not, check the side stand kill switch. It kills the engine so that you don’t start out with the side stand down. If broken or out of adjustment, it would kill the spark. Check for a broken wire at the side stand switch and coupler. Try moving the kill switch by hand. If that doesn’t work then wire a jumper around the switch to bypass it.
  • Only twist the throttle one time in ten kicks. Extra gas gets pumped in on every twist of the throttle. Twist too often and flooding happens.
  • Check the fuses. How good is the battery? Is the handlebar kill switch on?
  • Check the operation of the ignition switch and all kill switches with a volt ohmmeter. Check the wiring harness. Did a wire come unplugged? Are all wires clean and with solid connections? Any abraded or pinched wires? Is the bike in neutral and the neutral light is lit up? If no neutral light, check the neutral switch and neutral switch wire on center casing. If still no spark, get CDI system and coils checked at the dealers shop.
  • Got gas and is it turned on? Clean air filter?
  • Carb, head and intake manifold mounted tight?
  • Does the carb intake manifold have reeds? What condition are they in?

    No spark

Check the side stand kill switch if your bike has one. It kills the engine so that you don’t start out with the side stand down. If broken or out of adjustment, it would kill the spark. Check for a broken wire at the side stand switch and coupler. Try moving the kill switch by hand. If that doesn’t work then wire a jumper around the switch to bypass it. Check the fuses. How good is the battery? Try a jump start from your car battery. Is the handlebar kill switch on? Check the operation of the ignition switch and all kill switches with a volt ohmmeter. Install new spark plug.

If that doesn't do it, check the wiring harness. You can screw up a CDI unit checking it yourself.
