Hi and welcome to fixya,

This can either be a Timing problem or bad fire. If you say the plugs are sparking, then it can be that it fires where it shouldn't be firing. The misfire can also be caused by a double fire on the plugs. Time the engine properly, adjust the timing chain, check for proper engine compression as well..
Hope this helps

Where is and what firing order of spark plugs for 2008 ford f150 4.0l v6

Firing order can be obtained at any parts store, online or at a dealer. Misfiring can be a bad spark plug, a bad spark plug wire. Bad news is a bad value seat (most likely intake) or the fuel injector may be the issue.

1999 harley davidson softail standard won't start back fires

You have a wasted spark system and you are getting fuel. Probably you need new spark plugs as even if the old ones look good and might spark out of the engine it appears they will not spark properly under compression pressures and the fuel that remains unburned is ignited when the spark plug fires on the exhaust stroke when there is not pressure and therfore teh backfires.

YAMAHA YZF R1 2000 NOT STARTING

A little more information is needed here. Is the bike turning over? Is the starter motor turning the engine over but not starting? Is it sputtering or coughing or backfiring?

Was it running and then just stopped? has it been sitting for a while and now won't start?

Engines need fuel, air, compression and spark to fire. Try the following. Try to start it and then:

1. pull the spark plugs. Are they wet? can you smell gas? If not you probably are not getting fuel to the engine for it to start. This bike probably has fuel injection. On many FI bikes, when you turn it on you can hear the fuel pump turn on. do you hear that? Look at the fuse box and see if you have a blown fuse for any critical functions such as fuel pump, ignition, etc.

How do the spark plugs look? Are they corroded and black and burned looking? Fouled spark plugs. Try replacing them. If they are whitish and look as if the metal as eroded away your engine is running lean and you need new plugs but also need to address running too lean or you will burn up your engine.

2. If spark plugs are wet you are getting gas. hold the base of the spark plug against metal such as the engine and press the starter. You should see a spark on the plug if it is properly grounded. If you don't see a spark then either your plugs are bad or you aren't getting spark due to a dead battery or a problem between the battery and the spark plug such as fuse box or an issue with chip that controls the engine.

3. How old is the battery? If you are having battery issues you probably can't run the starter but you might be having issues there as well.

4. If the bike is sputtering and backfiring it is probably a timing issue. I don't know your model of bike but I am pretty sure the timing is controlled by a chip. That may have issues or again, maybe a fuse that controls elements of the ignition system has blown. Are there any wires that have broken or have exposed metal that could be shorting? Any of the leads to the FI system come undone?

Kawazaki kdx 125 wont start

KICK HARDER TRY PULL STARTING IT..IN SECOND GEAR..DOES IT HAVE ENOUGH COMPRESSION TO START?IT SHOULD START PULLING IT...START OFF WITH NO THROTTLE THAN IF NOT STARTING CRACK THE THROTTLE SO LIGHTLY AND SHE SHOULD FIRE OFF WHILE IN GEAR BEING PULLED OF COURSE BE CARE FUL NOT TO RUN INTO. WHO EVERS PULLING YOU..USE A LONG TOW ROPE..IF YOUR NOT A SEASONDED RIDER AND KNOW YOUR BIKE VERY WELL I WOULD NOT ATTEMPT THE PULL START...IF NOT CHECK YOUR COMPRESSION AND TIMING..MAJOR VACUUM LEAK MAYBE AT BASE GASKET..IS ENGINE SUCKING TO MUCH AIR? GOOD LUCK..

2003 H-D Sportster 883 XLH backfire and sputter problem

There are two things that can cause what you describe: Lack of fuel, and lack of spark.

The easy way to eliminate is put an extra spark plug in your pocket....Ride the bike until it quits, then pull one plug wire, plug in your spark plug and hold the base of it against the block, and crank the engine, while observing the plug.

If you have spark, fuel flow issue is likely, check all filters, and strainers (in tank too). You can pull the fuel line and open the fuel valve and observe flow, but be careful of spark and fire, happens EASILY.

If you do not have spark, investigate the ignition system, if electronic, you can be overheating, usually requiring component replacement.

97 FLHTC/I As I was driving the bike { 65mph } it started backfiring and then would not get any fuel, then it would catch, then start backfiring again and lose power, then shut off. I let it...

I am assuming this is the injected model (i did not think they made them in 97), the most common problem of this scenario is the spark plug, if your plugs are ok than your injectors may require servicing, make sure you are getting fuel and your fuel filter is ok

Front cylinder of my 1982 yamaha virago is not firing, it gets spark. It is causing the bike to misfire and backfire, please contact me with any suggestions you may have.

If you are sure it is getting a spark; you have pulled the wire and verified spark to plug when plug is grounded to the frame.... Then you should check the carb to be sure it is getting fuel to the bowl. There should be a screw near the bottom of the float bowl; loosen it and watch for fuel to flow out the drain hole. If no fuel flows you can tap lightly on the bowl with handle end of a screwdriver to try and loosen the float shutoff to allow it to fill with gas. If the bike was put up wet or got dirty gas you may have to rebuild/clean the carbs very well to correct the problem. Do be sure to clean up any gas off of engine before letting the engine warm up to keep from having a fire hazard. If gas flows and you have spark it may actually be bad gas or water in gas. For water in gas the easiest thing to do is add a bottle of rubbing alcohol; as close to 100% pure you can get. The alcohol will mix with the water and you will get less sputtering and missing while you run the tank thru.

Missing and backfireing, while running

First off, if by backfiring you mean that it is popping out of the exhaust, this is the result of the missing problem. When the enigne misfires, the unburned fuel/air mixture is exhausted into the exhaust pipes. The next time the engine fires on that cylinder, it ignites this unburned mixture causing the loud pop.

It sounds like your problem is ignition related. It the engine was starving for fuel, you probably would not have the backfire through the exhaust. The first thing to do is change the spark plugs. If you try to "test" the spark, you must have a set of plugs in the engine as your engine is equipped with a compression sensor. If there are no plugs in the spark plug holes, no compression, you will not get a spark. If the new plugs don't cure your problem, you probably need to take it to a dealer. The reason is that trouble shooting the electronic ignition is very difficult. Replacing parts until you fix the problem is very expensive. Regrettably, bikes are headed the same direction as cars, no user servicable parts on the machine. That's why I still ride a Shovelhead with points, a coil, and a carburetor. The EPA hates me too.

I have been building a chopper out of this model bike, have the bike complete but it isn't starting. It trys to turn over but it wont fire up.

To begin with you need a good battery @ 12Volts.
Check if there is spark at the spark plugs.remove one spark plug and earth it (spark plug body) and crank start and observe for the spark.
Check if fuel ( gas ) gets into the combustion chamber.
Try cranking it and thn remove the spark plugs and check if they are wet with gas.
Basically these are two things to check first.
Hope this helps!,
Let me know of the outcome and hope to be of help further..Thks.

2001 V-Star Classic won't start

A yellow spark is a weak spark. A blueish white spark is normal. It sounds like the CDI is not in good shape. A dealer can quickly check the system and tell you what the bike needs.

A “very helpful” rating for this answer? Thanks!
