Hi and welcome to fixya,

you can narrow down the problem by synchronizing the carburetors. Check for timing as well (use a timing light) .. It is important to time and synchronize 4 piston engines. This diagnostic check will make sure you get the most power out of your current engine configuration.

hope this helps

On cold days, the yamaha fuel injected bikes rev higher to warm up the engine quickly. It is still ok to ride the bike on a cold engine, but it will perform much better when the engine is warmed up.

Plug the vacuum line you unplugged and the idle should come back. Change your air filter and the map sensor. check for correct coolant level and replace the coolant temp. sensor. This sensor affects cold starting and idle through the ECU (open loop mode, rich fuel mapping and 1200 rpm idle) It should go to closed loop mode in the ECU once engine warm up is achieved ( lean fuel mapping and normal 900 rpm idle). Do not unplug anything else till you perform an OBDII scan of the stored fault history

I have a 2006 Freestar with a 3.9 Engine . When it is cold it has a miss when i step on it. But it gets better when it starts to warm up. Almost seems like a spark plug miss

Spark Plugs ---change at 70,000 miles
O2 Sensors--change at 100,000 miles (front 2 only)
Gas Filter--every 3 years/30,000 miles
Air Filter ---every 3 years/blow off once every year
MAF Sensor---Clean once a year or more often

Ignition Coils--- most definitely will go bad,at
least 1 a year. (Any Check Lights or Codes ? )

When cold, it isn't in closed-loop, and runs on
Long Term Fuel Trim--not on O2 Sensors ,until
warm

Let it warm up at least 4 minutes in cold weather,
go light on the gas for first 2 miles

2001 harley fatboy caugh and pops back through throttle body when cold. runs find when hot.

If you try to ride the bike or rev the engine up while it's cold, this is normal. Most engines will do this because the mixture is lean for a cold engine. When you start the engine, allow the engine to warm until it goes into the slower idle speed.

Good Luck

1987 Magna VF 700 Bike stalls when its cold outside

just a common thing in cold weather, sometimes you have to ride about 5 miles with choke half out, till the engine warms up. try draining your carbys or cleaning them out, sounds like ti could be running abit lean and not getting enough fuel

Won't idle until it is warmed up

Depending on the type of intake system, if it's a normally carburettored bike, there is an air mixture screw on your carby(s). Set this screw at one and one half turns out from being screwed to stop. Run bike till it is warm and set IDLE screw or throttle stop at optimum idle revs. Without using choke or throttle, turn the air mixture screw slowly in or out till revs build to highest level. Reset idle screw or throttle stop to set revs back down to optimum level as before. If this does not cure your problem, depending on if it's a 2 or four stroke, single or multi cylinder engine your problem may be one of many from fuel ratio, valve rocker clearance, ignition, plug range etc....specify make/model for proper info.
Cheers

What would cause hanging revs/RPMs when the engine is warm? It's a stock 2000 katana 600 with 14k miles. The revs don't hang when the engine is cold.

sounds to me like your carbs may need cleaning and or a rebuild, i had a 750 katana that would do that as well, didnt want to idle when cold, then too fast when warm/hot, gave my carbs a good cleaning and it cleared up, the jets can get plugged really easily, could also be bad gas, any contamination and or particles can cause problems, especially if the bike sits without running for too long, hope this helps =)

Engine revving on my V-strom 1000

when the bike is at normal running temp, set your idle at approx 900rpm. then rev it up and see if it returns to an idle. note: i had a suzuki that did the same thing. very cold blooded engine. when cold, had to use choke until it warmed up enough to idle. Idle should be adjusted at normal running temp.
