ive got one and i timed it the best i could without markes. I put a socket extension in the spark plug hole until it was top dead center and adjusted the cams. It should start but not having any luck.

Hi, fouled spark plugs will make starting a cold engine difficult and cause backfiring. Carbs not working properly will foul spark plugs. Install new spark plugs. Remove the spark plug and inspect it for evidence of fouling. I would clean the air filter 1st. Then I would put in a new plug....

You need the service manual to time the fly wheel....

You obviously need to time it with the marks, maybe a motorcycle mechanic needs to inspect it out...

You need a motorcycle mechanic for an evaluation of the backfiring situation. Your motorcycle may need a complete engine cleaning to solve the backfiring problem.

How many kicks should it take to start a 2003 yamaha yz450f?

One, That thing should fire up in a second, if not, you got to get it so it will. Try not touching the gas, just pull on the choke, and give it a try. If that doesn't do it, try something else next time. I had a KLR 250, kick only, and that thing would start first kick every time, no matter what. I loved that little bike. Hope this helps.
