Question about Harley Davidson FLHTCUI Electra Glide Ultra Classic Motorcycles
This is a question that has be argued over and over again. Harley has always said that you must use an oil that is rated for use in diesel engines. If you look on a can of oil, you'll usually see a round circle with star spikes on it. It'll have the initials "API" in it. The API rating of the oil will be SH, SJ, SI or something like for automotive use. For diesel use, it'll have something like CG, CF, or C something indicating it is rated for use in a diesel engine. The diesel oil has "high pressure" additives in it that Harley says their engine requires.
But, if you don't want to use Harley's oil, you can try Amsoil, Royal Purple, Mobil, RevTech, MotorFactory, Redline, or Golden Spectro. Some of these oils are pricey and will make H-D's oil look like a bargain. Other's aren't that expensive. You should go to each manufacturer's website and check for compatibility for use in your bike. Keep one thing in mind, it costs about $4000 to get an engine rebuilt. I wouldn't be putting cheap oil in my engine.
