Question about 1988 Honda XR 600 R

1 Answer

My xr 600 seized while running I had a just replaced the cdi box and was running perfect. I was able to shift down to neutral and got towed home . I tried shifting up but can't get it into second to see if the engine actually is seized. Is this a gear box problem the kick starter also wont kick. what is a good way to fix

    I figured .... old 87 .... probably not worth it ...
when that happens does that mean that the piston is fused to the case?

  • Anonymous Jan 01, 2011

yeah I figured it is an old 87 so maybe it is not worth it , does this mean the piston is fused to the case

  • Anonymous Jan 04, 2011

ok I went at it I pulled the top end and got to the piston. Unfortunately even in neutral the piston will not come up. I figure it is a transmission problem since 4rth and 5th are loose I am thinking it is a plate on the end and something came out of alignment . I will have to go deeper and split the cases.
Does any one have pictures or schematics do I have to take of the flywheel?

Hi , Sorry to hear this about your bike but follow these instruction . Firstly remove the spark plug . put your bike with the back wheel off the grown and in any gear try to turn the back wheel . due to no compression you should technically turn the rear wheel in gear . If this does not work and it will not kick start without the spark plug out and still remain seized i am afraid that you will need to look at getting a new top end rebuilt . Give it a try and let me know how you go .

Sounds from your description that this isn't an electrical issue, but rather a carb problem. Did the bike run well previously or is this a newly acquired machine and it always does this? It could be that your slide is stuck shut causing a bad mixture mid range, other possibilities include bent floats, or just they typical gumming up that happens when a bike sits for too long.

Cdi

Do not use a universal CDI unless you have the exact wiring cross-over diagram, or have tech help from the manufacturer. You can short out the CDI and other ignition components like the stator.

If you tow your car in neutral how come is stuck on one gear. Towing got no problems. That mean it wasnt in neutral it was in gear but the clutch is stuck and seem the gear is in neutral. You should have clutch problem before you think about gear box.

Can a 1998 4x4 S-10 blazer be dinghy towed?

Yes it can, just place your Transfer Case in Neutral position.
Shifting into NEUTRAL
To shift the transfer case to NEUTRAL do the following:

Make sure the vehicle is parked so that it will not roll.
Set the parking brake.
Start the vehicle or turn the ignition to RUN.
Connect the vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Put the transmission in NEUTRAL (N).
Shift the transfer case to 2HI.
Simultaneously press and hold the 2HI and 4LO buttons for 10 seconds. The red NEUTRAL light will come on when the transfer case shift to NEUTRAL is complete.
Shift the transmission to REVERSE (R) for one second, then shift the transmission to DRIVE (D) for one second, or FIRST (1) for vehicles equipped with a manual transmission.
Turn the ignition to LOCK.
Place the transmission shift lever in PARK (P), or FIRST (1) for vehicles with a manual transmission.
Release the parking brake prior to towing.

Shifting Out of NEUTRAL
To shift out of NEUTRAL:

Set the parking brake and apply the regular brake pedal.
Shift the transmission to NEUTRAL (N) and turn the ignition to RUN with the engine off.
Press the button for the desired transfer case shift position (2HI, 4HI, AUTO 4WD or 4LO).
After the transfer case has shifted out of NEUTRAL the red light will go out.
Release the parking brake.
You may start the engine and shift the transmission to the desired position.
Excessively shifting the transfer case into or out of the different modes may cause the transfer case to enter the shift protection mode. This will protect the transfer case from possible damage and will only allow the transfer case to respond to one shift per 10 seconds. The transfer case may stay in this mode for up to three minutes.

NEUTRAL: Shift the vehicle's transfer case to NEUTRAL only when towing your vehicle.
Good luck and hope this answers your question.

Need to tow 1999 F250 about 150 miles home. What

If you have a stick shift, you rent a 2 wheel tow dolly and run the front tires onto it and strap it down. Put the truck in neutral and away you go.
If you have an Automatic you want all 4 wheels on a flatbed or tow trailer. You rent a car hauler trailer and piggyback the truck onto the trailer. A good rental will know the weight and rent you the right trailer.

if theres no current to the cdi but the light works then its either the outer coil or the stator coil is bad and the lighting coil still works.
