As the light becomes live naturaly when the ignition is switched on normally, it can only be the break switch or the wire from the lamp has chafed against the metalwork of the bike and made the circuit complete. Indeed the handlebar break light switch is a good place to start!
Hope thaqt helps.

Electrical system failure on 2008 Pontiac Torrent while replacing brake light? Key now stuck in ignition?

No electrical system failure due to replacing a brake light. If the brake lights were not coming on, you may want to check your brake pedal switch. If the switch does not make properly, then the brake lights will not illuminate, and the transmission interlock may prevent the transmission from going into park, which locks the ignition cylinder (sometimes), but check that first.

I can start my ford e250 van but it's stuck in park. If I barely turn key on I can get it to shift in neutral and start it and drive it but no brake lights. Anyone have any idea what's going on?

Replace the brake switch. Under the dash, touching the brake pedal arm. Another possibility is the ignition switch by how you described it. Press the brake pedal and have some check the brake lights. If they come on, I would go after the ignition switch. No lights brake switch.

I have a 2000 Mercedes E430 base sedan. Last week I replaced the brake light switch because it was out and it solved the problem to the point that I can now put my car into gear and drive it, however, as...

Brake light switch problem may cause the ESP / BAS lights to illuminate.

Common symptoms of a bad
Mercedes brake light switch.
  • Car stuck in Park.
  • ABS ESP ETS lights come on.
  • Can not move the shifter from Park to Drive.
  • Brakes Defective Warning on Instrument Cluster
  • Car won't shift gears. Stuck in 2nd gear, limp mode.
  • Brake lights don't work. (Brake light switch can still be defective even if the brake lights work. Checking the brake light operation is not a good test.)
  • ESP, BAS, ABS lights turn on. Car won't shift properly. Stuck in gear.

TEST: To test your new brake light switch: Turn you car off to reset the ABS light. apply the parking brake. and start the car in neutral or park without using the brake. if the problem is the brake light switch... the light will only come on when you press the brake pedal.

If you replaced the brake light switch and the light is still on you should check a few other things such as:

  • Fuses and Relays
  • ABS pump
  • ABS wheel speed sensor
  • Brake Fluid Level
  • Get an advanced scanner to read trouble codes.

NOTE: ** You may need a MBZ scan tool to reset the error code which was stored in the ECU because of the bad brake light switch.

Brake light problem

Have you checked your brake fluid lately? If you're not low on fluid, I'd strongly suggest you take your car in for service, or to somebody who knows what they're doing. Don't sidestep brake problems.

97 chevy truck stuck in park after replacing brake booster

Check to see if your brake light come on when the brake pedal is depressed. If the brake lights do not turn on, check that the brake light switch is connected. More than likely, the switch was disconnected when the booster was replaced and not reconnected.
Other things to check if the brake switch wiring is attached.
Check fuse #16 in the instrument panel fuse panel; it is a 20 amp fuse. If it is good, check the wiring at the brake light switch. The light green wire at the brake light switch should have +12 volts when the ignition is in the run position. If you do not get +12 volt, it may indicate that the neutral safety switch is not functioning. The dark green / white wire at the switch should should be +12 volt with the ignition in the run position when the brake pedal is NOT applied. With the brakes applied, it should be almost ground. If you do not get ground, the shift lock control solenoid may be your problem.

Brake light will not come on when foot brake is applied. Brake light comes on when the front brake is applied. Checked fuses, nothing blown, Any ideas? this is a 2003 HD Heritage

Rear brake switch is likely stuck or bad.
Check the resistance of the switch with the rear brake depressed and up.
Look to see if the actuator on the switch is moving...if not, some WD-40 may fix it right up.
if the actuator is moving, you may need to replace the switch.

The rear brake lights are stuck on despite the pedal being in normal position draining the battery when the ignition is off. Any ideas?

unplug the brake light switch from the pedal end and see if the lights go out if so the switch is faulty or out of adjustment it must sit in a middle range.

Brake light on the dash is stuck on my 94 land cruiser ...why?

From your description it sounds like the warning light switch has either come adrift or stuck? If you examine the hand brake area look around for possibly a White plastic plunger that should be exposed when the hand brake is lifted/applied. To confirm identification there will be two wires possibly in a clip on plug going to it.
If the plunger/switch is in situe then it may have stuck, try gently pushing the plunger in and out it is sprung loaded so resistance should be felt, if you touch it and it is sloppy the try getting behind it and pushing the body back into its slot. You may have to remove the sock/gaitor that covers the hand brake base.
If all fails then try removing carefully the wired plug to it and the light will be permanently off on the Dash.
There you Go!
