Question about 2003 Harley Davidson FLHRCI Road King Classic

1 Answer

When I start my bike, the starter wants to keep engaging like I'm still hitting the start button. Sometimes when I turn on the ignition switch, it wants to start without even touching the start botton. I feel like it may be the start switch. It dont do it all the time, but when it does it does it bad.

I suspect the start button as well. Possibly some water got in there at some stage and it has damaged the contacts.

1979 CX500. When you push the start button why does light dim

The starter button when pushed in half way turns the power off to the lights so more electricity can be used for powering the ignition and starter at the same time. If you press lightly you can turn off the lights with out engaging the starter. Pressing all the way down engages the starter. The button is a two position switch. Carefully take it apart , clean it and put it back together and you may fix the problem.I have three old Honda motorcycles that all have right hand switch assemblies wired to them from other bikes (Because the original was no longer available) You should be able to rewire any Honda two cable switch too work on your bike.

Starting fault

There are two safety switches that you may need to test. 1) Neutral safety switch- this switch is what tells the bike that it's in neutral and allows the starter to engage. 2) Kickstand safety switch- this switch will not allow the bike to run in gear if the kickstand is down. My initial guess is the neutral safety switch. If the neutral safety switch is bad, then you will not be able to start the bike with the kickstand down because the bike thinks that it's in gear (even if in neutral). This also may explain why the initial intermitent problem of not starting when warm since the metal contacts will expand and possibly not make contact when warmed up. Are you trying to start the bike with the kickstand up or down? If it were the kickstand safety switch, the bike would probably start okay and then die when you put it in gear.
