If the engine was designed for leaded gas it would need hardened valves and valve seats put in,the harm of not having them is it could burn a valve

Hi , i would say this should be fine, however if you are worried you could use a fuel addative, you may also ask yourself how long they have been using unleaded fuel in Japan, regular servicing, with a keen eye on valve clearences is probably the best way to go, hope this helps, paul

Can i use unleaded petrol on my suzuki gs550 1979

Hi, Frank excellent question if your Suzuki owners manual specifies leaded fuel then you have three options replace the valve seats with hard stellite seats designed for unleaded fuel, run Avgas (aviation leaded fuel) or run unleaded fuel until you start having compression or smoking issues then replace the valves and seats, personaly I would opt for the latter as it would take many thousands of miles before you had an issue for more information about your question please visit the website below. Good luck and have a nice day.

I have a 1980 GS L 450 Suzuki that starts but

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Almost always, your described problem would be the float needle not closing the inlet seat. This could be caused by a dirt, sand, contaminant, worn needle ends, grooves on the seat. Unfortunately, the only fix would be to pull down the carbs again and redo. Considerations are:
  • ensure the pointed end of the float needle are not nicked, worn, necked, scratch;
  • ensure that the inlet seat are perfectly round and smooth. You may need a very very fine abrasive material and a Q-tip or cotton buds and do a bit of lapping ( almost similar to valve grinding);
  • ensure the float height is correctly adjusted;
  • verify float is not punctured with fuel sloshing inside.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.
