Question about Harley Davidson FLSTC Heritage Softail Classic Motorcycles

1 Answer

Have an 1988 Heritige Soft Tail. Just changed the battery. The battery was accidently reversed and momenterily connected. When the battery was connected correctly it has an instant drain which I traced to the solid state regulator/ Altenator. When the (twin) plug is taken off the generator the battery drain stops It almost seems like a dead short in the altenator. The terminals from the altenator have continuity betwen them. Neither terminal is short to earth. The terminals from regulator do no have continuity noe are they short to earth. Any help would be appreciated.

The reverse polarity has shorted a possible reverse diode in the semiconductor/alternator pack comprising the auto regulator/charging components. Normally it can be a failure in rectifer./regulator within this unit.
It will be better to replace this solid stage unit if you have a good AC voltage current from the alternator.( do a trial with the solid state unit taken out while you check the alternator current/voltage ) If so a replacement of the unit will solve the issue.
The alternator must be removed to check for the short within if there is no voltage/current. It can also be the failure of a protection diode within the alternator. So check this out.

1988 pathfinder no dash lights no revers lights no tail lights no gaiges

If they all stopped working at the same time then it is probably a fuse or possibly 2. Check your fuse panels in the dash and under the hood. The dash lights and gauges should be a fuse labeled instrument cluster or guages, it is probably blown. The other fuse to look for will be the tail light fuse. This is where I would begin.

1988 GMC 2500 5.7 automatic- I replaced starter and accidently hit the positive cable on the exhaust pipe (WoW--Sparkey!!) Where are the fuses for the starter?

their isnt one ,it handles 200 amps ,check the connections on the battery, and yes it does spark well also check the earth strap from engine to chassis in case you burnt it out.LESSON ONE always disconnect the battery before doing and work of this nature on the vehicle ,but we have all done it try it with a truck with 24v and two monster batteries

Reversed polarity on 2000 mazda millenuim, now my car wont start

if you are lucky, only the fusible link(in the fusebox in the engine bay) is blown. if you are not lucky, a whole lot of modules are blown, and this is really expensive.

1988 toyota pick up has no tail lights or dash lights

The tail light relay is under the plastic panel near the fuse box on the DRIVERS side. Yes I have had this problem. So in desperation I connected a wire from the battery to the lights, my wife continually ripped the wire out so I ran a hot wire to a switch and on to the running lights, turn the switch on and I have tail lights, then I noticed that with the switch off I could turn them on at the light switch. Possibly fumbling around reconnected something. I have tested every relay, fuse, wire for voltage and continuity and had zero results. Then the switch, who knew?
