Question about Suzuki AN 400 Burgman Motorcycles

Open Question

My bergman 400 scooter, 2004 will not start. Battery is ok and will turn the engine, but no start. It has some 5,000 miles use. I suspect it needs a new spark plug? What shop for repairs do you suggest?

finally sorted when I replaced both plugs. I've never come across one failing instantly before in 30 years of motorcycling (maybe that's because I ride old bm's!)

SOURCE: 50cc Two Stroke Scooter Engine - Poor Idle

I had the same problem- from out of nowhere the scooter started dying at every stop. I adjusted the idle screw to 2000 and it still idled up and down. I bought some injector cleaner but this will take a while to work (several tanks of gas) and then found this link- seems to be a very simple thing to do once you read this link. I hope it helps. --

SOURCE: cant get my 50cc scooter to fire up-no spark. any

  • Do you see spark? If not, check the side stand kill switch. It kills the engine so that you don’t start out with the side stand down. If broken or out of adjustment, it would kill the spark. Check for a broken wire at the side stand switch and coupler. Try moving the side stand kill switch by hand. If that doesn’t work then wire a jumper around the switch to bypass it.
  • Is the handlebar kill switch on? Is it shorted out?
  • Check the fuses.
  • Check the operation of the ignition switch and all kill switches with a volt ohmmeter. Check the wiring harness. Did a wire come unplugged? Are all wires clean and with solid connections? Any abraded or pinched wires?
  • Is the bike in neutral and the neutral light is lit up? If no neutral light, check the neutral switch and neutral switch wire on center or side casing.
  • If still no spark, get CDI system and coils checked at the dealers shop.

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Ignition Switch not in the "ON" position.
2. Engine Run Switch in the "OFF" position.
3. Discharged battery, check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
4. Bank angle sensor tripped and ignition/light key switch not cycled to the "OFF" position and then back to the "ON" position.
5. Security alarm needs a reset.
6. Starter control circuit, relay, or solenoid faulty.
7. Faulty starter button.
8. Electric starter shaft pinion gear is not engaging or over-running starter clutch slipping.

How many miles before oil change is needed

I drive quite a few miles in my 1998 LEXUS LS40 and have religiously changed the oil every 5,000 miles (and rotated the tires). Im pushing 185,000 miles on it now and I am due to change the timing belt a second time next weekend. That being said, I have never had any issues with the engine changing the oil at a 5,000 mile interval. I use the standard synthetic blend oil at the local quick stop type oil change places.

My son needs a engine put in his 2004 grand cherokee laredo 6 cyl.. Trying to get a guestimate of what it might cost to replace it. He let the engine run out of coolant.

Hello penann, if your willing to shop around you should be able to locate a good engine with less than 100,000 miles for $500 or $600. ( most engines will go for about 250,000 miles if they're taken care of.)

The install, if you don't already have a good relationship with a local mechanic, I would talk to family, friends, and even coworkers to see who does the work on their vehicles. Quite often local mechanics would do a job like yours on the side for $300 or $400.

Trying to have it done at a dealership would get terribly expensive, and I'm not so sure that they would allow you to provide a used motor. You would most likely be looking at about $5,000 or more for a new engine and $1,500 to $1800 for the install.

Good luck my friend!
