Yes. you won't be able to get it registered unless that is corrected. The DMV is strict on this. Take it back and have the original owner get it corrected. Call your local DMV I will bet they say the same.

even if it is the last 8 letters or numbers that are the vehicle specific number.?

  • Truk1 Dec 29, 2010

unfortunately yes, the DMV checks the whole number with the inspection. If it is in the same sate you bought it in you may not have to have an inspection and can get it by them. However if it ever gets stolen or gets inspected by someone you sell it to there will be problems because you can't prove ownership. Even though it is only 2 numbers. I would call your local DMV and see what your options are. They may let you come in and get an inspection and make an amendment to the title. I have seen that done. It takes some time because they have to run a check on the number to make sure there is not an exisiting bike out there with that number. hope this helps.

I have a yamaha yz idea what year I need a new kick start and would also like to get a new title but I can't figure out what letters/numbers are the vin

The VIN is the frame number. There should be 17 alpha numeric digits if the bike was manufactured after 1982. Find the frame number then go to the site below. If the number has been altered or read incorrectly, the site will tell you " Check validation sum failed". Good luck getting a new title. They will want to know where the original title is and why your name isn't on that title.

This is a problem with your title. I'd consult the DMV about this. Here, as long as the VIN is correct as it appears on the frame, everything is fine. Some states use the engine number as their VIN number. Either way, the VIN should be the same as the one on your bike. Talk to the DMV about this.

Good Luck

Can't you "forget" about ownership and just ride the bike without a title? After all, you bought it that way. Some states have a "rebuilt from parts" option for bikes and cars. Check with the state and see if you can get title that way. The 10th digit would be "E" if the bike is a 1984. The 9th digit is the key. It is a verification digit tied to a mathematical formula using the prior 8 digits. Any chance the vehicle division in your state could run the existing license plate and locate the needed info that way? How about the registered owners contact info? Yes, I know how freaky the state can be when asking for information. Probably the best thing to do if you must have a title is to go to a cycle junkyard and buy what is left of a YZ250 that has a title and then use that frame, or at the least, re-number your frame to match the junkyard bikes title.

The VIN number should be 17 characters and found on the frame....should start with JYA

Now count off from the left to the 10th character,,,,,,,
if its an A its a 1980 model, B is an 1981, C is a 1983.

the 4H7 in the VIN means its an XJ650H model made in 1980 & 1981, Look up XJ650 on the net for more info on your bike.

Im trying to find out about my bike the vin is 3 DB 000222 its a yamaha 125

Jamie, the numbers shown are not the VIN number unless the bike is 1982 or plder. Current VINs are 17 digits. The VIN is the frame number. If the number shown came off the motor it will be useless in identifing the bike. You can check the VIN on the title if you have it, or find the number on the frame (usually in the steering stem area). The website below can identify the bike by the VIN. Please rate my answer.

Ask dealer to help you. Sometime the vin number is on the front forks of the bike. You can apply for a duplicate title at the court house. Doesn't cost much.

JM2LM026264 that's the number that i can find on the bike, but when i enter this vin number they say its not a good one. it is a FZR400/600cc model

There should be 17 alpha neumeric digits. Check the VIN on your title. If less than 17 digits then the bike is more than 10 years old. Take the bike to a dealer, buy some oil and spark plugs then have them look at the bike when they ask what year the bike is.

Vin location

It should be located on the right hand side of the down tube. Turn the handle bars to the left and look on the right side of the down tube. If it is not there or has been filed off most likely it is hot.
