You will first need the appropriate tools and equipment on hand before you start. A jack and jack stands to support your vehicle on both sides a wheel chock is always a good idea too. A drain pan to catch waste oil, An oil filter removal tool and either a wrench or ratchet and socket to remove your oil pan drain plug Don't forget your replacement oil filter and manufacturers recommended grade of oil to use. 1st rule be safe change oil when vehicle is not at full operating temp or oil may burn you. When your vehicle is raised and properly supported, open your hood, remove oil cap to allow venting, then underneath vehicle, place drain pan beneath oil pan drain plug and remove plug and set it aside. Allow oil to drain completely then reinstall drain plug and tighten without overtightening. Next place drain pan below oil filter and remove filter, install new filter (tighten by hand 1/4 turn after it feels snug (Do Not overtighten as this will destroy rubber seal and you will have a big mess on your hands) Refill oil with correct amount and weight of motor oil (see owners manual if needed) If you got any oil on vehicle I would clean it off before starting it otherwise start vehicle check for leaks, if all is good removie vehicle from jack stands and check oil level on flat ground to ensure it is full

If you have to ask, you should not attempt. Is risking a $4000.00 engine worth it. Take it to a repair shop.

Not helpful at all. All mechanics had to ask that question at some point. Changing oil is not rocket science, thanks, but no thanks for that input. No help at all.

Wont start 1996 jeep grand cherokee laredo inline six4.0 fuel inj

The first thing I would do since you think it was flooded is to replace the sparkplugs, sometimes if a spark plug has been washed out with gas you cannot get it completely dried out. After you replace sparkplugs try to start the engine. If the engine starts I would still recommend that you change your oil because of fuel saturation. If your engine fails to start I would suspect that you have a bad crankshaft position sensor as it is known to give problems. The crankshaft position sensor is located on the top of the transmission bell housing on the drivers side.
