Engine cuts out and sputters at 4000 rpm. sometimes hard starting. Quad 4

computer does not like to see 4000 rpm so it cuts out so no engine damage

sound like your throttle positioning sensor or even yhe throttle it self it is electronic as far as i know the tiny metal bands come of and if the reading from the pedal sensor is incorect fuel shut of wil ocure

4000 RPM? You have hit the rev limiter. It's there so you don't over rev the engine and do damage.

At 4000 rpm what does your speedo say. Your computer may be limiting both your mph and your rpms. I have a 2004 Ford Ranger at 90 mph the engine sputters and seems to miss. It will stay at 90. In neutral it revs fine. My problem is because of chip programming in the computer. Your problem may be the same.

1st run scans for fault codes.

That sounds like the camshaft synconizer..They dont oil good and they can squeak like a belt,,usually after a few mins of running..When your at wide open throttle the computer ignores the cam sensor so if it gets a bad signal,,it doesnt see it,,and you get no light...Look at the back of the engines intake..where the wires cross over to the firewall side..Under the throttle body..Listen carefully and see if you can hear it squeaking..Sometimes you have to use a hose to listen

If you were driving a voyager I'd suspect the fuel pump is starting to fail.

mine did the same thing take your turbo and ex manifold off look for cracks boost lag and replace any cracked ex parts or even turbo if cracked
