SOURCE: Grinding from rear shaft going into motor

There are two bearings in the assembly. The front is a needle bearing and the back is a ball bearing. One of the two (or both) are probably bad. I don't understand why the brakes would affect the bearing noise. Are you certain the brake pads are not grinding on the rotor?

SOURCE: Removal of motorcycle rear tire/shaft driven

The final drive assembly has to be unbolted from the swingarm and it is removed with the rear wheel. Once the assembly is off the bike, the axle can be removed and the final drive separated from the wheel.

There should be a circlips at the end of the driveshaft.
That circlips holds the shaft IN the differential parts.

If you have still warranty, let it repair by a dealer. The circlips is maybe INSIDE the differential casing and can thus destroy a lot of parts!

SOURCE: how to remove the rear tire with shaft drive

Pull the rear axle, and spacer on the brake side of wheel. Un hook brake rod and brake strut. Position yourself on the brake side of the bike and pull the rear wheel straight out of the final drive housing. Put a little grease on thhe final drive splines upon reinstalling the wheel to aid removal next time.

You should not have to unbolt the final drive assembly. Loosen the rear axle nut, take out the bolt, knock out the spacer , lift the caliper assembly out of the way and hang it by a wire, grab the wheel, and slide it sideways away from the final drive. The wheel should slide right off the spline of the final drive and roll out the back under the fender. If the wheel wont slide past the final drive let the air out of the tire. Be sure to coat the spline of the final drive with moly60 paste available at your local Honda dealer when reassembling.

Toro model 20332. Have put new transmission, belt and new drive wheels on back. When I use the personal pace bar it makes a grinding noise. Doesnt make noise unless I push that down.


Sounds like either the gears on the wheels or ends of the trans shaft are bad, or the internals of the trans are bad. Are the parts actually new-new, or used and new to the machine, you didn't specify. What happens when you manually spin the pulley on the top of the trans in either direction?

put the vehicle on a lift and have the mechanic observe the entire driveline while its running on the lift with the tires turning..this takes 2 people.. the shafts..and each wheel..look for anything loose or banging..its usually the front end that makes a lot of noise..it may also be in the transfer case..normally caused by different gear ratios in each axle..they must match front to rear..

Front end noise


Assuming that you have already ruled out the brakes, severely worn engine mounts can transmit vibration and noises from the engine which are not normally heard. You don't say in what I see but is the vehicle two or four wheel drive. Since you mention CV half shafts I have to assume it is at least front wheel drive. If the vehicle is four wheel drive then there is a front differential with bearings in it that may be at fault. Have you done both sides when you say "hub assembly". Defective hub bearings will make grinding noises which will change tone or intensity when turning, accelerating or braking however the noise is usually fairly constant unless they are only just starting to fail. CV joints don't normally "grind" unless they are really bad. They usually make progressively worse "clicking" sounds or "clunking" sounds especially when turning hard, changing gears or direction of travel (forward to reverse and back again). Do you have non-stock tires/wheels? Larger/wider than factory spec tire sizes can rub the fender wells when the car is moving or turning. Another thing it could possibly be is the air dam below the front bumper. If it is loose it will push down in the airstream while the car is moving and rub on the ground.

What would cause a loud roaring in the back seat of my 2001 Monte Carlo as I am driving?


That roaring noise should be a wheel bearing. Jack up the rear wheels and spin the tires by hand. You can hear a grinding noise if the noise inside the car is as load as you state.. The only other noise that will be like that is the differental gears inside the drive axle

Something is wrong with my rear end.i checked the gears and they look fine but when i lift the rear end and put it in drive only the passanger side wheel turns


it is definetly a differntial issue. to see if the gears are turning properly lift car, remove the diff cover and turn the tire by hand. both tires should turn if not its time to get new gears or differentail.

Rear differential is toast, either have a pinion gear that has had the teeth sheared off or a broken axle shaft or could have also stripped the splines for the axle shaft.

Rear direrintial


The rear diff. turns the rear wheels. It is located in the middle of the rear axle. It won't last long if you ignore it. May just need dearing's but if it is driven the cog wheels will grind to dust or drop off this can cause the rear axle to seize up and can be a danger because the back wheels will lock up. If you are going to fix it yourself let me know and I will be able to guide you through the process

Volvo XC70, Grinding Noise


sounds like c/v axles (front drive shafts) they will make a clicking sound normally when turning sharp and accell at the same time at slow speeds / look at the axle boots and look for grease on the inside of the front wheels leaking out the axle boots
