SOURCE: what is the head bolt torque on a 1990 suzuki lt250r

The 8mm head bolts are torqued at 19 - 21 ft/lbs.
any smaller 6mm bolts are torqued to only 6 ft/lbs
like those on the lower cylinder.

SOURCE: 1996 Suzuki Savage 650 backfires on cutoff

I had the same prob with my 97, It was not the head gasket but the O-ring on top of the head. Replaced the O-ring and has been running good for a year now with no backfire. Hope this helps.

(initial):13 N-m (1.3 kgf-m, 9.5 lb-ft)
(Final):23 N-m (2.3 kg-fm, 16.5 lb-ft)

8mm nut= 16.5 to19.5 lb/ft
9mm nut =21 to 24 lb/ft..

Mine had the same problem. I had to remove the head cover assembly and reseal it with new silicone.

98 and older suzuki swift torque is 54 ft. lb. 99 and newer are 49 ft. lbs.the sequence is starting in the center two then move to the adjacent two on the right or left, you choose, and then whichever you choose "hop" over the center two you tightened and tighten those two, "hop" over the center again to the farthest ones on outside and tighten them then "hop" over to opposite side and do those. basically working from inside out. this is the torque sequence for a 1.3l. same concept though for a 3 cyl.

Since you didn't say which engine you have, I've pulled torque specs for 3 different engines. Also, since I can't include a diagram showing the relative locations of the numbered head-bolt locations, it would be a good idea for you to purchase a vehicle specific repair guide that will show this info.


Take particular note about the TTY (Torque to Yield) bolts used on 2 of the 3 engines shown. It is said that new head bolts MUST BE USED when head is replaced or re-installed to obtain the proper torque.



B2500 4 Cylinder

12 point bolts step 1- 40 ft lbs

CAUTION: During the final tightening sequence, bolt No.11 will be tightened to a lower torque than the rest of the bolts. DO NOT overtighten bolt No.11.

  • Tighten all bolts in sequence (1 through 14) to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.) torque.
  • Tighten all bolts in sequence (1 through 14) to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.) torque.
  • Check all bolts to verify they are set to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.) torque.

    • Tighten retaining bolts in sequence to 80 Nm (59 ft. lbs.).
    • Then back off bolts 360°.
CAUTION: Always use new cylinder head bolts when installing cylinder head or damage to engine may occur.
  1. Tighten the cylinder head retaining bolts in two final tightening steps in sequence shown in the following illustration:
    • 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.)
    • 92 Nm (68 ft. lbs.)
