Question about Yamaha XJ 700 S Maxim Motorcycles

1 Answer

I have a 1985 Yamaha XJ700n Maxim motorcycle and I am trying to install bigger jets in my carburetor. One of the things that I need to do is locate the mixture screw that is plugged. I was told "they are on top, right next to the choke plungers". Everything looks the same on all 4 carbs except for the vacuum fitting. I'm looking at the right side of the carb and cannot figure it out. I have hunted all over the internet for a pic showing the exact location of this capped screw and can't find anything. I don't know what to drill. I just need a labled pic showing exactly where to drill for this screw. I don't know what to look for.

They are on the side just above the float bowl, they are sealed with epoxy.

SOURCE: How do I re-jet my carbs?

Basic setting for idle adjustments is ~1-1/2 to 2 turns CCW from CW stop. New stock (paper) air filters don't require re-jetting--only K&N foam replacements require one size bigger main jet. Adjust each carburetor idle screw for smoothest idle. Each screw should be about the same adjustment--if one is non-responsive, that carburetor may need internal cleaning. Make sure you have good spark plugs and the ignition points are clean and set to proper clearance. The ignition coils on these old Honda's were typically weak--try to find a modern replacement. The carburetor slide needles should have the 'C' clips in the center groove. Make sure the retainers are down tight. Check the engine valve clearances (about 0.003 " cold) for both valves when the crankshaft is set for TDC when that cylinder is coming up on compression.

SOURCE: i have a yamaha xj700n maxim and when i let go the

Check to see if the throttle cable or throttle linkage are sticking. With the bike turned off, twist the throttle grip and let it go. It should snap back with no hesitation or delay.

If it seems sticky, try cleaning and lightly lubricating the grip, cable and carbs. Disconnect the cable from the grip and spray WD40 down into the end of the cable. (There is a tool called a "cable luber" to help with this, but you do the job without it.) If you have compressed air, blow out the WD40 with compressed air and then put a few drops of light oil such as Triflow down the cable.

Spray down the carb linkages with carb cleaner and blow clean with compressed air or brush clean with a toothbrush. Once clean, lightly lube joints with Triflow. (Too much lube will only attract dirt.)

Other possibilities include:
- incorrectly adjusted throttle cable (check adjustment nuts)
- bad throttle return spring on carbs
- incorrectly adjusted fuel mixture

Riding with a sticky throttle can lead to dangerous situations and you should remedy this before riding your bike any further.

SOURCE: Carburetor on yamaha xj700 maxim x

Actually, they're not Hitachi carbs. Since you have a 1985 "Maxim-X", the model number is actually XJ700XN. The XJ700 does indeed have Hitachi carbs but your bike, the XJ700XN Maxim-X has BS33 Mikuni carbs.

Careful with the model number, the XJ700 and the XJ700X are entirely different bikes.

By the way, if you want more answers about your Maxim-X, feel free to visit the "Maximum Maxim-X" web site at www.maxim-x.com and the lesser known FTP site for the Maximum Maxim-X web site at www.maxim-x.com/pix

1985 maxim x 700 has trouble starting sometimes and wants to idle at 4000 rpm or stalls when adjusted, just rebuilt the carburetor still won't idle correctly

Hi, Dlmninja and the usual suspects are:
1. Idle speed improperly adjusted.
2. Air fuel mixture screws not properly adjusted.
3. Inlet system air leak.
4. Leaking accelerator pump.
5. Loose low-speed jet.
6. Plugged low-speed jet.
7. Contaminated or plugged low-speed circuit.
8. Enrichner valve/choke not seated or leaking.
