How would you install a clutch on a 2007 xl 1200 harley davidson

If you are going to replace the entire clutch assembly, simply remove engine sprocket, primary chain, and the mainshaft nut, pull the clutch assembly off and put another one on. But, this is extremely expensive because you're replacing the inner clutch hub and the outer clutch shell. If you want to simply put new clutch discs in, you need a special tool to compress the diaphragm type clutch spring and get the snap ring off. The tool cost about $50 or so depending on the brand of tool you purchase.

When I install clutch basket hub on my 1978 superglide 1200cc, I torque the nut to 50-60 ft lbs. Transmission will not turn. Seems to be in a bind. Loosened nut, transmission frees up. The manual shows no...

The inner clutch hub fits onto the tapered mainshaft of the transmission. If I understand you correctly, you are saying that when you put the inner hub on and torque the nut, it locks up and will not turn. The mainshaft has a woodruf key in it that goes into a slot in the in hub. If this key is pushed out when installing the clutch, it will become trapped between the hub and the inner primary housing locking the clutch assembly up. Sometimes getting the inner hub on without knocking this key out can be a daunting task for someone that is new at it. Take the hub back off, put the key in the mainshaft using a thick grease or something. Look into the hole in the inner hub as you install it and make sure the key is aligned with the slot.
