You need the valves adjusted(badly),possibly a valve shim kit, this is very common on all 4-stroke engines.your supossed to adjust the valves every 15-20 hrs of riding.first thing you need if you want to do it yourself is a repair manual(clymer,ect.).You can buy them on e-bay for around $30.00 and you can buy the shim kits on there also.and a cheap filler gauge from auto-zone,and about 30min-1hr to do the work.or you can take it in and have it done at the steelership for around $70.00. ps. dont run her to long without having it done or you can burn the valves up,and that wont be easy or cheep to fix...just FYI..... latter......YZ-maniac.(I ride em like i stole em)

My 2005 450 RMZ exhaust pipe glows red at idle. What size jets do I need at 1000' elevation?

Hi, Mark your motorcycle is a high-performance dirt bike designed to run flat out that being said if you are strolling down some scenic trail at a slow speed or letting the bike idle for a few minutes your header pipe will turn cherry red, why you ask? It is not a street bike, it is designed for competition and weight is a major factor all necessary components are of the smallest and lightest design necessary to maintain performance under extreme conditions ie. small radiator and inside frame oil reservoir that doesn't get cooled, the majority of your riding needs to be at high speed. I have a 2001 yamaha yz426f that backfires after start and shoots flame from exaust and the exaust gets so hot it glows red.

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery, should have 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
2. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
3. Faulty main circuit breaker and or connections.
4. Faulty ignition coil and or connections.
5. Faulty spark plug, oil or gas fouled, wrong heat range or service type, wrong gap, loose in the cylinder head, broken electrode or insulator.
6. Faulty spark plug cables, leaking or broken, internal damage.
7. Faulty ignition module, switch, CKP, MAP, CMP, sensor and or any connector in the ignition circuit could have corroded, loose, or broken pins/sockets
8. Burnt exhaust valve or air leak in the exhaust system.

2007 yamaha yz450f... while riding last week it was backfiring on deceleration. it blew a 5 inch hole in the header pipe. i purchased a new one, cleaned the air filter, changed the oil and put a new spark...

Exhaust leaks near the exhaust port can draw air into pipe on deceleration and detonate any unburnt fuel leaving engine, causing backfire and high temps.
An overly lean fuel mixture on the engine can make decel backfire worse too.

What tempature should my rmz 450 run at? Also why does my header pipe get red hot after running for only five min. at idle?

The cooling system on the RM-Z450 was designed for motocross and only works efficiently with air flowing through the radiator. You should not sit at idle for more than a minute or two if at all possible. The extreme high output of this engine causes extremely high exhaust output temperature. The pipe temps can reach 600-800 degrees F plus all the way back to the silencer. This is normal on all modern racing 4-strokes. There are a lot of aftermarket products available that help increase the cooling system efficiency. There are also several products that help insulate critical areas from engine and exhaust heat including shields for fuel tanks/lines, the carb/throttle body, rear shock, and plastic body work.

Exhaust glows bright red.

These bikes dont like to idle for very long. If you ride at a reasonable pace, it shouldn't glow for long. If it persists... Your jetting is too lean. Check out thumpertalk.com for a pictorial step by step how to re-jet

Yzf 450f `04 exhaust pipe glows red --believe it to be lean burn

They will all glow red when you let them idle for a couple minutes. The timing is retarded at idle I believe. Once reved up they will cool off. I figure best to give them a little rev once and a while to help prevent this.
