Well, it depends on the year and model of the Harley. On the earlier Harley, both the Big Twins and the Sportsters, the generator was located externally on the lower front of the engine. In 1970, the Big Twins went to an alternator. It was and still is located in the forward end of the primary cover on the engines sprocket shaft. The Sportster didn't got to the alternator until late 1984. From that year to 1990, the alternator was behind the outer clutch basket at the rear of the primary. In 1991 to present, the alternator is located in the same place as it is on the Big Twin models, in the forward end of the primary case. I hope this helps.

Good Luck

Bad Voltage Regulator

Hi there:
The voltage regulator for the alternator is internal to the powertrain control module (PCM) and the PCM is located on the passenger's side under the hood on the fire wall; HERE diagram.

If you can't get to the wires with it running check the wires with an ohm meter to make sure there are no bad wires. HERE is a diagram to help.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I'll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using Fixya, and have a nice day.

Hi Anonymous, correct wiring from voltage regulator is:
1. Green wire goes to "F" on generator.
2. Red wire goes to "A" on generator
3. Black/Tan wire goes to power side of ignition switch

Need a diagram how to replace my regulator on 2000 harley davidson duice

There is no diagram. Most of the time, the plug going from the regulator to the alternator in the engine is pre-wired, simply unplug the old one and plug in the new one. If it's not prewired, the two short wires with the connectors on them go to the plug. Since the voltage coming out of the alternator is AC, it makes no difference which goes where. The single long wire goes back to the positive battery post, main circuit breaker, or the starter. Follow the orignal wire back and find out where it connects. Reroute the new wire in the same path.

I am switching from a barnet back to the stock clutch on my 06 sportster 1200. How do I assemble the plates?

http://www.bikebandit.com/2006-harley-davidson-sportster-1200-low-xl1200l/o/m18603#sch622966

You assemble the clutch plates alternating with fiber to metal. The "spring plate" goes in the middle of the clutch pac. Refer to the draw at the above site. I hope this helps.

The genorator is not charging

Check the output with a voltmeter to see if its giving out voltage when engine is running.
If its not then you will have to get a new alternator or have the one you got repaired.
It could be simple like the brushes or diode needs to be changed.

Need the color coded wiring for the alternator for a XLH 1000 Sporster, 1982

First off, an '82 Sportster does not have an alternator. Sportsters didn't come out with alternators until late 1984 and then they were located behind the outer clutch drum.

Now if your bike is an 1982 model with a generator on the front of the engine, there should be three wires going to the generator. One green wire goes to the "Field" terminal and two tan wires go to the "Armature" terminal.

Don't forget to "polarize" the generator but momentarily arcing the generator's "Armature" terminal with the battery positive terminal. The regulator should be connected to the generator.

Clutch

I really don't understand your question. I would assume that by "what goes in first" you mean what type of clutch plate goes in first. Since the outer clutch drum is metal, a fiber plate goes in first and from that point on, it alternates metal and fiber. If you still have the original "spring plate" in the stack, it goes in the middle.

Check your alternator. Or the Alternator belt.
Sounds like you basically used up the rest of your charge in the battery after the alternator went out.
let me know.
