If it has set for 2 years, you did the right thing by draining the old gas, and you would be smart to
change fuel filters as well. if you can pull your spark plugs and clean real good , better yet just
replace them, so you will not have to wonder . have While you have everything apart look at your
plug wires, bend them and look to see if you see small cracks in the boot or wires, is so replace
being that it is an 1985 your coil could be weak , but take your spark plug put back in the wire
and rest the other end of the plug up against the head and turn your motor over a few times looking
at the end of the plug you should be seeing a good blue spark, if not replace it. look at carbs to
see if everything looks free of rust and any vacum lines have cracks, if so replace. put 1 bottle
of heet in your gas tank and then use your new gas, spray carbs with WD-40 put everything back
together and crank it up. You will be very proud of your self. Good luck

I noticed you said you drained the old gas....but you didn't say anything about cleaning the carbs. I would highly doubt you have any spark issues if you got it to run. I would think your jets are plugged up beyond belief. There are Idle jets (pilot jets) and main jets. The idle jets do exactly as they sound, they are used when the bike is idleing and just taking up a little gas, so they are much smaller. Your mains are connected to the needle that is attached to the slides, when you give it throttle, the vacuum pulls that slide up and opens up that main jet, which is considered in-use if you are 1/8 throttle on up to wide open throttle (that 1/8 is different on each bike, sometimes is 1/3..etc..) If your mains are pulling enough gas (because the idle jets are plugged) then it will run, poorly until you really open up the throttle. I would start there, because its free, and if its been sitting for even ONE year without proper winterization or stabilizing the gas, then it's the idle jets in the carb 99 out of 100 times. Let us know how it turns out.

I have a 1985 xv700 virago. one of my plugs are misfiring. I had issues with my original one. yamaha dealer told me i needed a new cdi box. He sold me a used cdi igniter box from a non running 1985 Yamaha...

follow the plug wire back to the coil and see if there are any breaks, if not might switch coil with the other one and see if the other plug now misfires, if so replace the coil, most cdi problems are not intermittent, typically they either work, or they dont.

Yamaha Virago XV700 - 1987 Seat Removal

Most Yamaha models have 2 bolts holding the seat on, usually located between the top shock mounts and the side covers. You should be able to find them without too much trouble, but remember- they are metric. Hope this helps.
