No. Virago's are "V" twins, the XS 650 is a side by sied twin.

How to get more performance from a Yamaha XJ 650

Hi, Anonymous for this situation I would call my local dealer or reputable shop's service/parts department and inquire about any possible quick fix, answers, or parts inquiry. If necessary, transport your bike to the dealer or shop and have a professional technician take it for a test drive, if it is in running condition, and give you a written estimate of repairs and answer any specific questions you may have about your problem. I have a 1980 xs650. where are the engine numbers

Generic Comment:

My guess is that a 1980 is points. Look in the area where the cam shaft should be.. Look for a round or oval cover with phillips screws. Pop it off.

My '79 xs650 is popping thru the exhaust. It was fine last year except for leaking petcocks. I cleaned the taps and put new K&L kits in each side. Still have some trouble with leak thru to the carbs....

reset float levels and make sure that your needle and seat is not leaking and check that you have no air leaks on your inlet rubbers.

clean the carb properly and remove all fuel jets , needle jet and air screws before blowing out.

Xs650 one cylinder lean

I had the same bike.there is a rubber line that connects the two carbs together.the carb with the lighter lean sparkplug is the one being feed by the other carb with the darker richer sparkplug with the fuel line connected to it i bet.

I ran one of my carbs too rich and blew the left piston.

Hi fixx it
With the XS650, if you blew a hole in a piston, it has been  detonating on that cylinder, probably too lean more than anything.
There are some great forums out there that you can get access to with lots of information about the XS650. I own one myself, and have used this forums to rebuild my bike.
for parts check out Mikes XS

The motors are easy to get out of the frame. One man can lift the engine, though I would recommend having someone hold the bike for you whilst getting it out.  I do have a link for a workshop manual somewhere, will get back to you shortly with that also.
happy to talk to you more about your classic bike. I love XS650's and ride one every day:)
regards robotek
